Case 53: Bonus 1 – Interviews

Jun 15, 2017 - 00:32:19

EAR/ONS BONUS EPISODE #1 Interviews with Jane Carson-Sandler & Carol Daly Jane Carson-Sandler survived the brutal attack and rape of the East Area Rapist in the October of 1976. She is the fifth known survivor. She was in bed with her three-year-old son when they were attacked. Her attack had come off the back of around a month of hang up calls. These calls had escalated, and one time, Jane told the caller to stop, the voice then told her he was going to kill her husband. Police who were not linked to the Rapist investigation assured the family it sounded like a prank. Just before Jane's attack, she reported a break-in to police. She had found muddy footprints on the carpet under her son's window, and upon further inspection of the house, she realised inexpensive jewellery had been stolen. Detectives who investigated were not the officers working the rape cases, so weren't privy to previous attacks. They reassured her it seemed like the work of kids. Jane had links to the medical field, the armed forces as well as the education system. Three sections of the community to come up again and again throughout the series. You heard during the series that Detective Carol Daly began working the East Area Rapist cases from the day of Jane's attack. Jane's crime scene was the first encounter that Carol had with any survivor of the rapist. Carol's life and career were changed that day. Carol went on to be an integral figure in the support and rehabilitation for survivors of rape, both those by the East Area Rapist as well as others.

Case 53: The Original Night Stalker (Part 5)

Jun 3, 2017 - 01:33:18

[Part 5 of 5] When Part 4 began, it was August 1978. Sergeant Jim Bevins and Lieutenant Ray Root from the Sacramento Task Force held a special meeting with law enforcement agencies in Contra Costa County. They believed The East Area Rapist was heading south, possibly to Southern California, and they felt he would strike in Contra Costa County on the way. They advised Contra Costa law enforcement agencies to form a task force and work together, but there was pushback – the general feeling in the room was, “Not in our county”. When Bevins and Root were proven right, a task force was formed headed up by Detective Larry Crompton. Crompton consulted a criminal psychologist, Dr Emily, who warned him that the East Area Rapist wanted to kill, he just needed justification. During a search after attack 43, the first attack in Danville, investigators found pages torn from a spiral notebook, known as “The Homework”. They were “The General Custer essay”, “The 6th grade rant” and “The punishment map” – a hand-drawn map of a housing development. On July 5th, 1979, the East Area Rapist attacked a couple in Danville, but they had a plan in place. The husband stood over the rapist and yelled at him, while his wife ran outside and screamed for help. The rapist took a few steps back. He didn’t attack, and he made no move for a weapon. He didn’t say anything. He just stared at the husband through the jagged holes of his mask. The husband made a run for it, and the East Area Rapist escaped. Police were on scene in minutes, and tracking dogs picked up his scent. But he slipped through their fingers again. ________ Open and download map #5 of the attacks here Open and download "The Homework" files here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. ‘Flatline intro’ and ‘Come play with me’ intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. Case 53: The East Area Rapist 1978–1979 (Part 4)

Jun 3, 2017 - 01:30:48

[Part 4 of 5] Part 3 began with an emergency press conference in mid-1977. A composite sketch, as well as a physical and psychological profile of the East Area Rapist, was released. The public were warned to be vigilant. Police received thousands of tips, and there were countless sightings of the rapist, unfortunately, these sightings weren’t always reported at the time. Many persons of interest made the suspect list, some even looked like prime suspects due to many similarities, but these turned out to be nothing more than strange coincidences, and most were eliminated from the investigation. The East Area Rapist enjoyed communicating with police, the press and survivors. In August 77, the Sacramento County Sherriff’s Office received a letter, known as the “afraid letter” from someone claiming to know who the East Area Rapist was. The letter writer requested to be contacted by the press if the police wanted further contact. The police did what the letter writer asked, but they never heard from the person again. The rapist started calling survivors, ranging from hang up calls to obscene calls and threats to kill. A local TV station received a poem, called ‘excitements crave”, claiming to be from the East Area Rapist. After a dentist went public and added more to the reward offer for the East Area Rapist’s capture, he attacked close to the dentist’s office in South Sacramento. The furthest south he had attacked up to that point. Police had another close call when they set up a covert operation in a Rancho Cordova 7-Eleven store. This backfired when the suspicious male they were waiting for, called the store and asked to speak to the officers. Brian and Katie Maggiore were shot dead in Rancho Cordova in February 1978. With the exception of one further attack in South Sacramento after the shooting, the attacks moved outwards after this, to Stockton, Modesto and Davis. ________ Open and download map #4 of the attacks here Open and download "The Homework" files here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. ‘Flatline intro’ and ‘Come play with me’ intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. Case 53: The East Area Rapist 1977–1978 (Part 3)

May 27, 2017 - 01:38:46

[Part 3 of 5] 1977 started off with a task force being created by the Sacramento Sherriff’s department to catch the East Area Rapist. The crime lab was able to determine that the rapist’s blood was Type A. The rapist continued following his earlier MO until the local papers made special mention of the fact he had never attacked a woman with a man present in the house. He adjusted, and from that time on he targeted couples. As the year went on, and attacks grew more and more frequent, so too did the press coverage. But still, it was a time when not everyone got news the moment it happened. While there were many people terrified of the East Area Rapist, there were those who were still oblivious.   Despite the east area rapist having a very specific MO, it was not released to the public. The police didn’t want a state of panic and they didn’t want a copycat. But that meant when women got hang up phone calls, or heavy breathing calls, or when there was a break-in with nothing of value taken, only strange items moved around or stolen, the community had no idea these were related to the East Area Rapist case. In mid may 1977 the rapist showed everyone he may have been in attendance at a community meeting that took place towards the end of 1976. At this meeting, a man stood up, paced up and down yelling that no man would stand by and let his wife get raped, he certainly wouldn’t. Just seven months later, the East Area Rapist targeted this man and his wife. During this attack, the rapist said he would kill his next victims. But there was confusion as to what exactly he said. According to the survivor, he said he would kill two people if he heard about the attack in the media. But according to her husband, he said he would kill two people if he didn’t hear about the attack. When we left part 2, the police were deciding what to do…   ________ Open and download map of the attacks here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. ‘Flatline intro’ and ‘Come play with me’ intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. Case 53: The East Area Rapist 1977 (Part 2)

May 20, 2017 - 01:42:00

[Part 2 of 4] On June 18th, 1976, the Sacramento Sherriff’s Department responded to a break in, and rape of a young woman. By the end of the year, there were ten attacks in total, all attributed to the one serial offender, who the media dubbed, “The East Area Rapist”. Detectives with the Sherriff’s Department noticed the MO of the East Area Rapist fairly early on but kept the information under wraps. They didn’t want a state of panic, they didn’t want a copycat, and they didn’t want to alert the East Area Rapist that they were onto him. But by November 1976, the community started to become aware that a violent serial predator was walking their streets. The Sacramento Sherriff’s Department attended a local school meeting. Their intention was general crime prevention, but as people questioned rumours of the rapes, they were forced to confirm that a serial rapist was at large. The police were shocked at the brazen nature of the attacks and the meticulous planning. The East Area Rapist moved through the community with military precision. He seemed to always know where the police were. Did he have a police radio? Did he have ears in the force? Or was he just lucky? He had no sense of fear, his level of bravado was rarely seen in criminal investigations. And he had only just gotten started.   ________ Open and download map of the attacks here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. ‘Flatline intro’ and ‘Come play with me’ intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. May 13, 2017 - 01:55:27

[Part 1 of 4] In 1976, Rancho Cordova was a fairly new, postwar suburb in East Sacramento. Beginning as a housing development in the 50’s by the 70’s it was predominantly a middle-class single story neighbourhood, surrounded by other similar suburbs. Rancho Cordova was the place where a wave of violence and terror came crashing down on the state of California. This growing community was completely unprepared for what was coming.   ________ Open and download map of the attacks here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. ‘Flatline intro’ and ‘Come play with me’ intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. On November 8th, 2010, just after 9.30pm; 25-year-old Jennifer Pan was in her bedroom. She had her TV on and was chatting on the phone while getting ready for bed. She could hear movement downstairs and voices she didn’t recognise. There were people in the house. She heard footsteps thudding so loudly up the stairs; she knew they could not be her parents. They could not be her younger brother Felix either; he was living half an hour away at University. Jennifer hung up the phone and sat frozen in her room. She was too scared to turn the tv down, and she was too scared to open her door. Case 49: The Moors Murders (Part 3)

Apr 1, 2017 - 01:59:11

(A recap of part two) Brady and Hindley continued their killing spree, murdering Keith Bennett on the 16th of June 1964, seven months after the murder of John Kilbride. Two months later Hindley’s sister Maureen married David Smith. Brady and Hindley had virtually nothing to do with David and Maureen before their marriage, and Hindley, in particular, didn’t approve. But after the marriage, they became close. Brady and Hindley murdered Lesley Ann Downey on the 26th of December 1964, Brady tape recorded some of what happened and took photographs. After the death of David and Maureen’s child, Angela Dawn. Brady became even closer to David. Slowly trying to manipulate him and bring him into his inner sanctum. He gave David the same books to read that he had given Hindley and started talking about murder, and how there was nothing wrong with taking a life. On the 6th of October 1965, Brady met Edward Evans at Manchester Central Railway Station. He invited him to his and Hindley’s house at 16 Wardle Brook Avenue, Hattersley for drinks. When they got there, he instructed Hindley to go and get David to join them. When David got to the house, he witnessed Brady murder Edward with an axe. After months of moulding David, this was his attempt to try and get David to join him in murder. David helped clean up, and told Brady and Hindley what they wanted to hear. But it all blew up in Brady’s face when David called the police, and they found Edward’s body still in the house. Brady was charged with his murder and Hindley was charged with being an accessory to Edward’s murder. In his interviews with police, David Smith said Brady had told him about other murders he had committed. Although David didn’t believe him at the time, he said Brady specifically mentioned taking people from Manchester and burying them on the Moors. Police started searching through missing person files, and the cases of Pauline Reade, Keith Bennet, Lesley Ann Downey and John Kilbride jumped out at them. Detective Joseph Mounsey noticed some odd looking photographs in the albums of Brady and Hindley. They were photos of mostly dirt he believed were taken on the Moors. A gut instinct led officer Robert Spiers to search up on a hill after the search had already been called off for the day. He found the body of Lesley Ann Downey. Police had also found the suitcases Brady kept with the incriminating material. They found photo’s of Lesley and the tape. They were getting ready to re-interview Brady and Hindley about Lesley Ann Downey…   __________ Researched and written by Victoria Dieffenbacher   Music – 'Flatline intro' and 'Come play with me' intro and outro  – All other music scoring and production performed by Mike Migas and Andrew Joslyn

Case 49: The Moors Murders (Part 2)

Mar 25, 2017 - 01:43:43

A recap of Part 1. Ian Brady and Myra Hindley met while working together at Millwards Merchandising company. They committed the murder of 16-year-old Pauline Reade on the 12th of July 1963. Four months later the 23rd of November 1963 they murdered 12-year-old John Kilbride. They drove both victims to Saddleworth Moor, where they killed them and buried them. Police were investigating both disappearances, and there was a large amount of media interest in both, but the two cases had not been linked. The families of Pauline and John were doing everything they could to find them. Organising their own searches and door knocks. Brady and Hindley visited the Moor often, on what they called reconnaissance trips. They had started taking what they called souvenirs, photographs of themselves standing on the graves, which were put into albums. To everyone else, the photos blended in with other pictures of holidays and family gatherings. Only Brady and Hindley knew the secret. Shortly After Pauline Reade's murder, Brady bought Hindley a record. The theme song to “The Legion’s Last Patrol” by Ken Thorne and his orchestra. The morning of John Kilbride’s murder Brady bought her the record, “24 hours from Tulsa” by Gene Pitney. Brady called these anniversary gifts. For the anniversary of their perfect crimes. If either of them hummed the songs, it would be a private reference to the murders. It was now the 16th of June 1964. Seven months after the murder of John Kilbride. Brady had told Hindley he was ready to do another one. And he gave her another anniversary gift. “It’s over”, by Roy Orbison.   __________ Researched and written by Victoria Dieffenbacher   Music – 'Flatline intro' and 'Come play with me' intro and outro  – All other music scoring and production performed by Mike Migas and Andrew Joslyn

Case 49: The Moors Murders (Part 1)

Mar 18, 2017 - 01:26:55

The moors in England have been a matter of interest and discussion ever since their immortalization in Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.” Where they were described as never-ending, wild, and even maddening. In Thomas Hardy’s "Tess of the d'Urbervilles", he chose the English Moors as a metaphor for fear, ignorance and savagery. The Saddleworth Moor is an area covering 400 square miles in the Peak District of North West England. More widely known as Greater Manchester. The Saddleworth Moor is a rich mixture of sweeping valleys, hills and plateaus falling away to fast-flowing streams. Rocky formations jut out of the blanketed, dense peat grass that covers the area. The soil is poor, and so only the hardiest of vegetation survives. Standing at 1,312 feet above sea level, thick morning fog appears like cloud barely lifting from the ground. The eery stillness and silence are deafening. Its immensity is both daunting as well as fascinating. However, in the 1960’s, the Moors came to the world’s attention in a very different, frightening light. They became the scene for some of the most notorious and sadistic crimes committed in Britain. The infamous Moors murders.   __________ Researched and written by Victoria Dieffenbacher   Subscribe on iTunes itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/casef…id998568017?mt=2   Social Media – Twitter – Facebook – Instagram – YouTube   Music – 'Flatline intro' and 'Come play with me' intro and outro  – All other music scoring and production performed by Mike Migas and Andrew Joslyn   RESOURCES   Articles: – Moors Murder breakthrough: Cops closer to finding victim’s body after ‘crucial discovery’ – Daily Star – Moors murderer Ian Brady in SECOND bid to starve himself using taxpayers’ cash – Daily Star – Moors serial killer Ian Brady sent sick fan down memory lane in a guided tour – Daily Star Sunday – REVEALED: Serial child killer Ian Brady asks gangsters to guard ‘thousands’ at his funeral – Daily Star – How one schoolboy nearly became the sixth victim of the Moors Murderers – Manchester Evening News – Moors murderer Ian Brady says he is dying – The Telegraph – Moors murderer Ian Brady makes new bid for move to prison so he can starve himself to death – The Mirror – Moors Murders 50 years on: Alone and hated, but Ian Brady still thinks he’s better than ‘the maggots’ he’s locked up with – Manchester Evening News – David Smith – The Telegraph – Moors killer Ian Brady ‘cut his teeth’ killing tramps, top detective claims – Daily Star – Mother of missing Moors murder victim dies without knowing son’s burial place – The Guardian   Books: – “One of Your Own: The Life and Death of Myra Hindley” by Carol Ann Lee – “Evil Revelations: The Man Who Witnessed The Moors Murders” by David Smith and Carol Ann Lee   Documentaries: – “The Moors Murders Code” (2004) – “Myra Hindley: Making of a Monster” (2003)

Case 48: Suzy Lamplugh

Mar 4, 2017 - 00:58:36

On the 28th July 1986, 25-year-old Suzy Lamplugh went to work like every other day. The office at Sturgis and Sons Real Estate was busy, and everyone was rushing about their day. Just after 12.30pm Suzy left the office with her purse, which contained 15 pounds, her credit cards, and her car keys. She left her handbag behind. She drove her work car, a white Ford Fiesta, to an appointment on Shorrolds Road in Fulham. Her diary entry read “12:45 Mr Kipper – 37 Shorrolds Road O/S.” O/S meaning meet outside the property. She was seen waiting outside the three storey, white Victorian Terrace just after 12.45. At 1 pm the next door neighbour at number 35, looked out his window and saw Suzy greet a good-looking, well-dressed man with swept-back dark hair, dressed in a suit and tie. By late afternoon when Suzy hadn’t returned to the office, her work mates started to wonder where she was. It wasn’t like Suzy to take long lunch breaks or take time off. She would always let someone know where she was. They checked her diary and saw the entry Suzy had made for the appointment with Mr Kipper. He was not known to anyone at the agency, and there was no one with that name in their records. There was no contact phone number for him either. At 6.45pm her manager reported Suzy’s disappearance to the police.   ____ Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories.   Subscribe on iTunes   SOCIAL MEDIA   Twitter  Facebook  Instagram  YouTube  or email host@casefilepodcast.com   MUSIC – 'Flatline intro' and 'Come play with me' intro and outro  – All other music scoring and production performed by Mike Migas and Andrew Joslyn

Case 47: Yara Gambirasio

Feb 25, 2017 - 00:47:00

Brembate di Sopra is a small and picturesque town 7km or 4 miles north-west of the city of Bergamo in Northern Italy. About an hours drive from Milan. The province of Lombardy covers the cities of Milan and Bergamo including the small town of Brembate di Sopra. With it’s close proximity to Lake Como and the Swiss and Austrian borders, it is a popular stopover for tourists. The area is dotted with ancient villas and palazzos. It is a humble town, not modernised to the extent of nearby Milan. Many homes still use wood burning stoves, raise chickens and grow their own vegetables. Postcards of the snow capped the Bergamo Alps sit in shop displays, and the views from the small town are a reminder that things don’t change at a fast pace in rural Italy. The town has a traditional historical centre, classic church steeples and winding paths and gardens. It still feels like an old town with old traditions and values. Every year the small town hosts a street parade where townsfolk and others from the area come together to dress in Harlequin fancy dress and make traditional wooden floats to parade the streets. Like many old parts of the country, family values are deeply rooted, and people are fiercely loyal. With around 8,000 residents, Brembate di Sopra is a quiet, close-knit rural community, a safe environment for a young family. A place where a 13-year-old girl walking to a nearby sports centre, alone in the late afternoon, was not given a second thought.   ––––– Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. It is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Australia.  The largest percentage of residents are Vietnamese, followed by Chinese, Thais, Cambodians and many other nationalities. In the late 80’s and 90’s, Cabramatta was a hotbed for crime. Heroin was rife throughout the suburb. Cabramatta Railway station was known as the ‘junkie express,' with users pouring in from all over, looking for their fix. And where there is a huge drug problem, there is a crime. Violent gangs, home invasions, robberies, bashings, extortions, kidnappings, and murder…

West Yorkshire is a county in England that has a population of over 2 million people. It covers an area of over 2,000 km² and is formed by five cities: Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees, and Calderdale. Each one of these cities has its own history, its own identity, and its own voice. But during the 1970’s, they were all united. The residents of each city were looking over their shoulders, praying they wouldn’t be the next victim, in one man’s reign of terror who the press named, “The Yorkshire Ripper.” We left part one with sex workers being warned to take care, to not stand alone and to not take lifts from people they didn’t know. Unfortunately, many women couldn’t afford to take this advice, and the Ripper would kill again…

Case 36: Amok

Oct 15, 2016 - 00:36:33

The Polish press called it “The perfect murder.” “One of the most unconventional police investigations ever conducted.” It was 9:30 am, November 13th, the year 2000. A male caller phoned an advertising company in the city of Wroclaw, Poland. Wroclaw is the 4th largest city in Poland and has a population of about 635 thousand people. At different times throughout history, Wroclaw has been part of Bohemia, Hungary, The Austrian Empire, Prussia, and Germany. It became part of Poland in 1945 as a result of border changes after the 2nd world War. The male caller wanted to speak to the owner of the advertising company, Dariusz Janiszewski. He needed three advertising signs made up, and he needed it done urgently. But it was Dariusz’s Mother who answered the call. When she asked further questions about the job, the caller refused to speak to her any further. He demanded to talk to Dariusz. Dariusz wasn’t in the office, and so his Mother gave the caller his cell phone number. She didn’t recognize the caller's voice, and he didn’t leave a name, although she thought he sounded professional. Dariusz returned to the office later that day. He mentioned that he had been contacted by the male caller about the urgent job and he had arranged to meet with him later that afternoon. At 4:00 pm Dariusz left the office to meet with the caller. He left his car in the parking lot, which his family said was unusual, as he usually took his car when meeting with customers away from the office. Dariusz never returned for his car, and he never made it home to his wife. What followed was one of the most unconventional police investigations ever conducted...

Case 24: Russell Street Bombing Part 2

Jul 9, 2016 - 00:35:07

We left part one just after the government announced a 500 thousand dollar reward for any information to help solve the case. It was hoped this large reward would be enough to entice a male caller to make contact again. He had already called numerous times before, claiming to know who the bombers were. Police weren't sure if he was making it up or if he really did know something, but they needed to find out either way. Did the lure of the big reward work? Case 24: Russell Street Bombing Part 1

Jul 2, 2016 - 00:23:24

Haros Avenue in Nunawading (Melbourne) presented a problem for the police surveillance team following the red jaguar. It was a small dead end street. No way to observe the house there bank robbery suspect was heading to, without being obvious. To avoid being detected the police had no choice but to let the suspect out of there sight. There was only one way in and out of Haros Avenue, so the suspect would have to come back past them eventually. When the 1979 model Holden Commodore drove out of the street, the police weren’t to know there suspect was inside. They were looking for a red jaguar. Not a commodore. It was a stroke of luck for the suspect. He had no idea the police were watching him. The change of cars had nothing to do with avoiding the police tail. There was a far more sinister reason for the switch… Subscribe on iTunes itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/casef…id998568017?mt=2 A preview video of the upcoming episode is released each week. Case 23: The Frankston Serial Killer Part 1

Donna had recently received a few prank calls and she was getting nervous. She had a young baby and didn’t like the idea of being alone at night. Her boyfriend Les worked as a pizza delivery driver, and she decided to spend the night driving around in the car with him, rather then stay home alone. The first thing Donna saw when she returned home was her cat on the lounge room floor, dead. The words “Donna you’re dead”, were written in blood up on the wall. In the bathroom were Donna’s two kittens. Both also dead. The unit had been ransacked. Drawers pulled out, cupboards opened, her things thrown everywhere. There were knife slash and stab marks on the walls and in cupboards. Case 20: Stoni Blair and Stephen Berry

May 21, 2016 - 00:33:18

CASE 20: Stoni Blair and Stephen Berry The details of this case are extremely difficult to hear. Extreme child abuse and child murder are involved. This episode wont be for everybody. There is far more court room audio then narration. It is a one off for this episode. It is not something that will be a regular feature in the future. The court room confession is detailed and horrific. Listener discretion is advised. Case 19: Snowtown

May 14, 2016 - 01:31:06

Case 19: Snowtown Living in Australia, I had heard of the Snowtown case. I knew it as the bodies in the barrels case. But that’s all I knew. I had no idea about the who, the what, the why, or the when. So I didn’t know it was the worst case of serial killing in Australia’s history, involving torture and dismemberment. None of the murder victim’s are children, however child sexual abuse is prominent throughout. It is a deeply disturbing, depraved case. I didn’t know any of that when I started looking into Snowtown, but now you do, and you can make an informed decision if you want to listen or not. Case 17: The Eriksson Twins

Apr 30, 2016 - 00:32:46

On the 17th of May 2008, two motorway patrol officers attended to a call that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle on the M6 motorway, near the city Stoke-on-Trent, in England. Expecting the worst, the two officers were surprised when they arrived to see two pedestrians standing calmly and un injured on the shoulder of the motorway. It didn’t look like much was going on at all. But within a few minutes, the seemingly calm situation took a frightening twist. Case 16: Chris and Cru Kahui

Apr 23, 2016 - 01:24:23

Chris and Cru Kahui were twins, aged just 3 months old when they died in hospital, both suffering from traumatic brain injury. There death was the result of severe impact, either from direct blows or being hit, thrown or slammed against a hard surface. Violent shaking was another possible cause, and couldn’t be ruled out. What was clear was that the twins injuries weren’t accidental. There death was the result of somebody using deliberate force against them. It was determined the injuries were most likely inflicted at the same time, by the same person. The twins had been murdered. So who was responsible? Case 15: The Weepy Voiced Killer

Apr 16, 2016 - 00:27:03

In the early 80’s a series of attacks occurred in the twin city area of Minnesota, USA. The victim’s were all women. Police struggled in the initial part of the investigation. There was no physical evidence, and there were no witnesses. But there was one person who wanted to help the police, the man responsible. He called 911 after committing the attacks . The tapes were released to the public in the hopes that somebody would recognise the voice. This is how he came to be known, as the “The weepy voiced killer”. But was he just taunting the police, or did he really want to be stopped. Case 13: The Family Court Murders

Apr 2, 2016 - 00:55:18

In the 1980's in Sydney Australia, Justice David Opas was shot dead outside his home and bombs were exploded at the homes of Justice Richard Gee and Justice Ray Watson. All three were Family Law Court judges. After these attacks, the Parramatta Family Law Court building was bombed and there was an attempted assassination of Family Law Court solicitor Gary Watts. What was the connection between those attacks and the shooting murder of 25 year old surfie Stephen Blanchard and the bombing of a Jehovas Witness Kingdom hall, killing Jehovas witness member Graham Wykes, and seriously injuring many other men, women and children. For years police worked hard to crack the case known as the Family Court Murders, some of the most serious offences ever committed in Australia. Never before had judges or the courts themselves been under attack. But despite there best efforts, nobody was charged. A vicious, ruthless killer was free to roam the streets... RESOURCES 1. Case 12: Katherine Knight

Mar 26, 2016 - 00:45:35

The crime scene was described as looking more like the set of a horror movie, than real life. It is one of the most horrific crimes ever committed. Not only did it shock the small town of Aberdeen in country NSW, where the crime occurred, it shocked the entire nation of Australia and parts of the world. What could possibly drive somebody to do this. A psychiatric illness? Or pre meditated, pre planned, pure evil? Case 11: Anneliese Michel

Mar 19, 2016 - 00:44:09

First came the seizures and sleep paralysis. Then came the hallucinations and violent behaviour. Anneliese Michel made endless visits to doctor’s and specialists only to be either refereed to another doctor, or placed on medication that wasn’t helping her. Her condition became so bad that at times she started to growl and speak in a horrific deep voice, destroy religious objects and complain religious sites like churches were too painful for her to go near. She convinced her parents and several priests she was possessed by demons. It led to the catholic church making the unusual decision to grant two priests permission to perform an exorcism ritual. But was Anneliese really possessed by demons? The medical community doesn't think so. They were certain of what Anneliese was suffering from, even though they couldn’t diagnose her properly whilst she was alive. Four people were eventually charged with negligent homicide after her death. The trial that followed was described as the biggest criminal trial in Germany, outside of the Nazi war crime trials. The story of Anneliese Michel is as heartbreaking as it is horrific. Incredibly, some of the exorcism rituals were recorded. The tapes were never allowed to be played in court.... but they will be played during this episode. RESOURCES 1. Case 09: Jonathan Luna

Mar 5, 2016 - 00:33:35

He was implicated in a case of Missing money from a court house evidence vault. He was facing allegations of misconduct and illegal handling of a witness in a major drug trafficking trial, which lead to the judge ordering a federal investigation. One way to stop that federal investigation would be to come up with a quick plea deal to end the case. One problem, there was no way to do the plea deal without violating federal law. Case 06: Roger Dean

Feb 13, 2016 - 00:32:48

"You won't believe it, but it was like, satan saying to me that it's the right thing to do" In the early hours of the 18th of November 2011 a fire was deliberately lit at the Quakers Hill Nursing Home. The nursing home housed 89 residents, a lot of whom were high dependant patients who were immobile, suffering dementia and alzheimer's disease. The fire killed a total of fourteen residents and many who survived suffered burns and smoke inhalation. The case is one of Australia’s worst ever mass murders. Committed by a registered nurse, Roger Dean. The person in charge of the nursing home that night. What made this monster burn down a nursing home and take fourteen lives? Case 05: Donna Wheeler

Feb 6, 2016 - 00:24:14

On Tuesday the 2nd of November 1999 Donna Wheeler was found murdered in her home in Berala, Western Sydney. There were several suspects. Was it her ex husband John who found her body and called the police? Was it her violent ex boyfriend Keith who was recently arrested for assaulting Donna. Keith wasn't happy that Donna was spending a lot of time with his Brother Colin since they separated. Speaking of Colin, he was seen with Donna on the night of her death. Which leaves us with the phone call she received from a male person asking to meet up that night... Case 04: Who Put Bella In The ‘Witch’ Elm

Jan 30, 2016 - 00:30:40

On the 18th of April 1943 four boys discovered a skeleton buried in the hollow of a wych-elm tree in Hagley Woods, England. Police immediately got to work on identifying the remains and trying to determine the cause of death, however the investigation hit a wall. They couldn’t identify the remains. About eight months later the messages started to appear around town, scrawled in white chalk across walls and abandoned buildings, “Who put Bella in the witch elm”.
