Our Trip to Taiwan

Jun 22, 2017 - 00:43:12

We traveled to Taiwan to refocus on work after some leisure travel in Japan, and visited a few different areas in the country. Our trip started with a visit to the capital city of Taipei, where we took in a number of interesting attractions including the Shilin night market, a beautiful sunset on Elephant Trail near Taipei 101, Yangmingshan Park, and some delicious Taiwanese food! From there we traveled to Kaohsiung to meet a friend and visited the beautiful Feilung waterfall, as well as the Giant Buddha and Formosa Blvd Station. On our eighth month of straight travel, we experienced a little travel burnout, but visiting a friend back in Taipei and getting out of our comfort zone helped bring us out and ensured the trip turned out to be a memorable one! On this episode we talk about our favourite things to do in Taipei and Kaohsiung, as well as some other Taiwanese attractions we didn't get a chance to visit. We discuss the importance of locating yourself well when visiting a city based on our experience with needing to travel relatively significant amounts of time to visit Taipei attractions, and a few tactics on how to pull yourself out of travel burnout should you start to experience it. We wrap up the episode by talking about Taiwan as being a good option as a place to teach English in Asia, and some of the benefits over teaching in surrounding countries. Enjoy! Can Travel Expectations Influence Your Experience?

Jun 15, 2017 - 00:32:02

A visit to Taiwan came highly recommended to us by friends as a budget friendly destination with great food and interesting attractions, but a flight in to a more inconvenient airport, misrepresented accommodation, and less than beautiful scenery quickly started to cause our experience to not live up to our expectations of the visit. In keeping an open mind while exploring more of the country, and employing a few tactics like seeking out foods and activities we enjoy, we were able to turn our experience around and came away really enjoying our trip. This change in our experience made us think about how our high expectations coming into Taiwan may have caused us to inaccurately weight our few initial negative experiences, and how expectations in general can influence the way you view a place. On this episode we talk about how factors like people's opinions, where you're coming from, and how long you're going to stay in a place can influence your expectations going into the destination, and ultimately your experience there. We discuss some tactics on how you may be able to turn around your view of a place where you're initially having negative experience by implementing a few strategies like establishing realistic expectations before you travel, seeking out foods and activities you enjoy, and planning your travel route around cost of living or a trip highlight. Keeping an open mind and working from your own experiences rather than overall recommendations from others can go a long way in helping you to make the most of your trip! Enjoy! Teaching English Abroad with the Grateful Gypsies

Jun 1, 2017 - 01:17:21

Sasha and Rachel (aka the Grateful Gypsies) met while working at a music festival in Michigan and have been traveling the world for just about 10 years. Soon after they met Sasha moved to Beijing to teach English, and Rachel joined him where they lived and worked for three years. After a gap year traveling everywhere from USA to Southeast Asia, and another teaching position in Kunming, China, Sasha and Rachel got married back home in the States then traveled to Bali where Sasha participated in the government run Darmasiswa cultural learning program. After a visit home to see family and take in some music festivals, they hit the road with a plan to travel Latin America, starting in Mexico. They are currently living in Puerto Vallarta teaching English online with the company VIP Kid. On this episode we talk to Sasha and Rachel about what life has been like on the road. They also share their best tips for people who are considering teaching English abroad (including common pitfalls to avoid!) and a number of resources for those with a specific interest in teaching in China. If you are thinking of traveling to China to teach English, this is definitely an episode you don't want to miss! Be sure to catch Sasha and Rachel when they feature on our new Online Hangout series on Tuesday June 13. Japan Part 2: Fujiyoshida, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima

May 25, 2017 - 00:56:14

We pick up where we left off last week during our time in Japan with us leaving Tokyo for the town of Fujiyoshida and beautiful views of the iconic Mt Fuji. From there we made the most of our JR Rail Passes on the Shinkansen bullet train and traveled to touristy Kyoto where there's lots to see and do! We learned some Japanese history, including the role Shintoism played in shaping Japanese culture, visited the famous Thousand Torii Gates, and took in a beautiful traditional tea ceremony! One of the highlights of our entire trip was our visit to Harry Potter World in Osaka, where we marveled at how quiet Japanese theme parks seemed in comparison to those we've visited in North America. Our last stop before our return to Tokyo was Hiroshima. The city's tragic past is beautifully commemorated with memorials and museums, giving visitors much to reflect on. We also got a chance to take in an exciting baseball game, which was an interesting juxtaposition against knowing the history of the horrific events that took place there during WWII. In addition to what we did in each of the cities, on this episode we talk about the benefits of purchasing a JR Rail Pass before your visit, our experiences with the Shinkansen bullet train, the benefits and challenges of visiting a country with a language barrier, how we decided which attractions to visit, and how our interest in learning about World History has increased through travel as opposed to when we learned it in a classroom setting. Japan has quickly climbed to the top of the list as one of our favourite countries and we wrap up the episode by sharing some cultural observations, tips for dining there on a budget and general takeaways when planning a trip to this fantastic country!   Enjoy!

Japan Part 1: Tokyo

May 18, 2017 - 00:59:53

We made plans to go to Japan with some friends during their trip to Canada last year, and were looking forward to our visit since we left for Asia in October of 2016. Landing in Tokyo, we were expecting an Asian version of New York City but were surprised by how quiet and orderly everything seemed! We loved the city and learning about Japanese culture by appreciating the kindness of the locals, enjoying the food (we had breakfast sushi for the first time!) and taking in the variety of beautiful cherry blossoms around the city. In the first of our two episodes about our time in Japan, we talk about our stay in Tokyo at the beginning and end of our trip. We jumped in right away with a walking tour which covered the popular Omotesanto and Harajuku neighbourhoods, and had some unique experiences with Becky Gillespie, who has been on the show, showing us around. She took us to the colourful Akihabara anime district, a trendy maid cafe, and a delicious traditional Japanese meal. We had some quintessential Tokyo experiences like visiting Shibuya Crossing and enjoying conveyor belt sushi, and talk about our experience in learning about the new culture around us. We also talk about how every experience we had made us fall in love with the country even more, and how it was bittersweet leaving on the last day.   If you are interested in learning about Japanese culture and the unique experiences Tokyo has to offer, you don't want to miss this episode! Our 2 Months in Bali

Apr 6, 2017 - 00:52:18

We spent 2 months in Bali and we're here to share what we did in Bali, where we went, and why we ended spending 2 months there. When we first planned our trip to Asia, we knew we wanted to go to Bali for at least a month! Amanda did her yoga teacher training there back in 2015 and loved it, and she was really excited to take Ryan back there and show him some of her favorite places on the island. We started our trip in Canggu, where Amanda did her yoga teacher training, and we spent our first few days hanging out on the coast, eating good food and practicing yoga before making our way to Ubud where we spent most of the rest of our 2 months. We really set up "life" in Ubud, purchasing memberships at Hubud Coworking space and at The Yoga Barn. Our days were spent eating great, healthy food, practicing yoga and working on some of our bigger projects at Hubud. We did take at least one day each week to explore though! We made a day trip to Seminyak, took a tour to some of the sights around Ubud, spent a day at The Bali Zoo through Voyagin, and took a day trip to Sanur. On this episode, we share why we loved Bali, what we did, and what our 2 months was like there. Enjoy! Biking Across America with Peter Neiger

Mar 30, 2017 - 01:16:16

Peter Neiger was working a good job and making good money, but he was unhappy. He sold his stuff, quit his job and decided to bike across America without any previous biking experience. We start this interview with Peter sharing what inspired him to bike across America, what the first month was like and what encouraged him to push on during really tough times. After a number of months on the road, Peter made his way to LA where he started a new career, and ended up finding himself back into the same spot as he was in DC. So, for the second time, Peter decided to quit his job to bike across the country. And this time, him and his wife decided to take all their work on the road and head out for 2.5 years with their dog. Peter shares what it was like to travel by bike with a dog, a remote job, and his wife. He shares challenges that they overcome, highlights of the trip, low lights of the trip, and what he learned along the way. We also talk about the decision to stop the biking trip despite not making it to all of the lower 48 states. Many of us can identify with the desire to stop, but it can be hard when you've attached a certain identity to yourself. Peter shares how biking became not fun for them anymore and how they ultimately made that decision. Enjoy! Life in Japan with Becky Gillespie

Mar 23, 2017 - 01:04:02

Becky Gillespie is originally from the US, but has been living in Tokyo for 10 years. As part of our pre-Japan preparation, we wanted to interview her about life in Japan. Becky first traveled to Japan to teach English through a company called Nova, and at that point, she had only planned one year in Japan. One year turned to two, and then after a couple of years she made the transition into accounting. Now, she has made the transition back to teaching in a different capacity, and got her permanent residency in Japan. On this episode, Becky shares what first brought her to Tokyo, what her life has been like in Tokyo over the last 10 years, what she has learned about Japanese culture, what she loves about living in Japan and what has kept her there. Becky also gives tips and recommendations for first time visitors like us, and much more! Myanmar Part 2: Inle Lake to Bagan and on to Mandalay

Mar 16, 2017 - 01:03:33

Last week on the podcast, we took you from Yangon to the Golden Rock, back to Yangon and we were headed on an overnight bus to Inle Lake right as we finished the episode. This week, we're picking up where we left off. We share what our 12 hour overnight bus from Yangon to Inle was like, and what we did in 3 days in Inle, including an entire day spent in the pouring rain. After Inle Lake, we take you to Mandalay where we explored the city and took in the U-Bein bridge at sunset, before making our way by bus to Bagan. Bagan is probably the most well known and photographed place in Myanmar, and it was one of the main reasons that we were (well, mainly Amanda) drawn to Myanmar. With over 2000 pagodas in the area, Bagan is a very unique part of the world. We spent 3 days exploring by ebike, and we take you around as we explore pagoda after pagoda, sunrise, sunset and everything else in between. Unfortunately, our time in began ended with a nasty dose of food poisoning, which made our last few days in Mandalay less exciting than we would have hoped. We share what that experience was like, our overall impressions of Mynmar, things to consider if you decide to go, and much more. Enjoy! Myanmar Part 1: Yangon to The Golden Rock

Mar 9, 2017 - 00:47:52

On this episode of the podcast, we're off to Myanmar! We spent 16 days exploring Myanmar and in order to dig deep, we've decided to split this episode up. In Part 1, we arrive in Yangon, spend 2 days exploring and then make our way to The Golden Rock to celebrate New Years Eve. From there, we bused back to Yangon where we killed a couple of hours at the airport (weird, we know) before catching our first overnight bus onward to Inle Lake. Throughout this episode take you with us as we explore Yangon, take a bus from Yangon to the Golden Rock, and then make our way up to the Golden Rock via the craziest "bus" we've ever taken. We share why we went to Myanmar, the challenges of traveling Myanmar, what we did in Yangon, what the Golden Rock was like, and much more. A Month in Chiang Mai

Mar 2, 2017 - 00:45:05

Chiang Mai is a popular destination for backpackers + location independent entrepreneurs alike! Our first time in Thailand, we didn't make it up to Chiang Mai, so this time around we wanted to get there, and we wanted to stay a while. We booked a month at a great AirBnb in the Nimman area, and discovered all the great restaurants in the area! We set up a routine where we were working 6 days a week, and taking one day off a week to explore the Chiang Mai area. On this episode, we discuss how we got into a routine where we were getting work done, while still discovering great restaurants, practicing yoga and exploring the area. We share what we did and some of our favorite activities in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is really a great place to do "you" - it pretty much has something for everyone in a really comfortable location. You can eat great food, see luxury movies for an affordable price, and hang out; or you can explore outside of the city and go hiking, swim in waterfalls, etc. Enjoy! The Reality of Being a Digital Nomad

Feb 9, 2017 - 00:40:18

It's been almost 5 months since we left Canada and started this adventure as digital nomads, and we've learned a ton about working remotely and traveling. On this episode, we share the reality of digital nomad life. Before leaving we had both idealized what working + traveling would be like, and we had both imagined it being a lot easier than it's been. In reality, it is awesome to work and travel, but it is still work, and there is the pull to constantly want to explore and see new things. We share what we've learned over the last 5 months, how we've found a routine on the road, and how we figured out what routine works best for us. If you are thinking about making the jump to digital nomad life, you don't want to miss this episode! Living in Malawi with Gret Glyer

Feb 2, 2017 - 01:09:31

Gret Glyer is the founder of DonorSee, an organization that allows you to raise money for charitable causes that are meaningful to you from anywhere in the world. Although we chat about DonorSee later in the episode, the focus is on how travel inspired Gret to change his life + create his business. After graduating college, Gret got a soul sucking job at Enterprise Rent-a-Car and found himself seeking something more. He found a job as a math teacher in Malawi, and after spending a year teaching, he knew that we wanted to do something even more. Gret transitioned into poverty alleviation and his first project was crowdfunding $800 to build a house for a local woman in Malawi. He created a company called HOWMs, which crowdfunded money to build multiple people homes in Malawi. From there, Gret continued to work in social entrepreneurship crowdfunding mosquito nets, a girls school, and many other projects. Then, DonorSee was born. On this episode, Gret shares what inspired him to travel to Malawi, what life in Malawi was like + how his experiences in Malawi changed the course of his life and ultimately how it inspired him to create DonorSee. How to Travel for Yourself

Jan 26, 2017 - 00:37:15

Have you ever planned a trip, but felt less than excited about what the guide book recommends? Or have you visited an attraction that everyone was talking about and thought to yourself "what's the big deal?"? On this episode, we are discussing traveling for yourself. This came up for us quite a bit last month as we planned our trip to Myanmar. We bought a guidebook and began to look at the recommended things to do, trying to filter out what we actually wanted to do and what would actually give us enjoyment. The thing that we struggle with is this idea that you "have' to see something. That you haven't really experienced a city or country if you don't see the top attractions. So, we're tackling how to deal with this, how to figure out what you like + don't like, and ultimately, how to enjoy your travels a little bit more. This episode of the podcast is brought to you by YOU - this listener of the show! We just changed up our rewards on Patreon, and becoming a supporter of the show has never been better. Malaysia

Dec 8, 2016 - 00:50:40

Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam dominate itineraries for South East Asia. Malaysia often gets left off. The last time we were in SE Asia, we didn’t even consider it, but when we were looking for a place to settle in for a week Kuala Lumpur was on the top of our list. This week is a recap of our time in Malaysia. In October we spent just over two weeks in Kuala Lumpur (KL), the Cameron Highlands, and Ipoh. We spent 10 days in KL to catch up on life, and then took a short trip to the Cameron Highlands and Ipoh, before returning and heading to Macau. Find out our favorite things in KL, if the Cameron Highlands are worth visiting, and the other top spots in Malaysia that we missed. Notes: Kuala Lumpur Watching the sunset over the Petronas Towers from KLCC park, Batu Caves, and other KL favorites Balancing work and travel Hiking and strawberries in the Cameron Highlands First time hitchhiking Recommendations if you’re going to the Cameron Highlands Other top spots in Malaysia that we missed (Malacca, Penang, Langkawi) Links to places mentioned as well as photo's from our trip can be found in the show notes at theworldwanderers.com This episode is brought to you by Praxis. Airbnb vs. Hostels and Hotels

Nov 25, 2016 - 00:46:56

It's a full on accommodation-isode. We break down why we are choosing to stay more and more at Airbnb's, less at hostels, and way less at hotels. We both love staying in hostels. They are a cheap place to spend a night, but there is a lot of other value you get from staying in a dorm room. The social aspect helps you learn what to do in a city and you have a better chance to meet people and have fun experiences with new friends. Lately, we've been staying a lot more at Airbnb's. When we look at what we can get on Airbnb for the price of two beds in a hostel dorm room, it usually blows the hostel away. In Kuala Lumpur, we had a fancy studio apartment for less that the price of two beds in a ten-bed dorm. It's a no-brainer from a comfort perspective, but after staying in Airbnb's for a while we began to feel like we were missing something from almost exclusive hostel travel.  We dig into the different types of accommodation we use and why you shouldn't just listen to your desire for comfort when booking accommodations.  Topics discussed:  Pro's and con's of Airbnb Pro's and con's of hostels Pro's and con's of hotels What's the best value for you as a traveling couple  How to balance comfort with personal development, fun, and excitement If you've never used airbnb before, you can use our link to get $25 of your first stay. http://www.theworldwanderers.com/airbnb/  Show notes featuring links mentioned in the episode can be found at theworldwanderers.com This episode is brought to you by Praxis. How Technology Has Changed The Way We Travel

Nov 3, 2016 - 00:48:40

Since we started traveling back in 2011, technology has had some major developments. On our first backpacking trip in Europe, we had to pay for wifi! We didn't travel with phones, and we used paper maps + guidebooks to get us from place to place. There were a lot of times when communication back home, and navigating ourselves around a new city was challenging. Technology has changed that. It has taken away a lot of the challenge of arriving in a brand new city, but it has also provided us with a way to live abroad comfortably. On this episode of the podcast, we share how technology has changed for each of our backpacking trips, and how technologies like Uber, AirBnb, Hostelworld + open cell phones have made travel much easier. We share the pros and cons to the changes we've experienced, and much more. If you like the podcast, join the community on Facebook + sign up for the newsletter. Teaching English in Asia with Marilyn and Matt from Words With Winos

Oct 6, 2016 - 01:08:12

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of doing an interview for the travel podcast Words with Winos. Matt and Marlyn, the hosts, are a couple who fell in love with travel and have built their lifestyle around it. As we talked with them and heard their story of leaving the U.S. after college to teach English in Asia we knew we needed to have them on The World Wanderers. Matt and Marilyn share their story of finishing college and deciding to chase adventure instead. From arriving in Bangkok for their first trip outside the U.S., to a midnight run from Korea, and now exploring Japan.  Matt and Marilyn have a wealth of experience from years teaching English in Thailand, Korea, and Vietnam. So this episode is hugely valuable for anyone considering teaching English abroad, but it is also great entertainment. On this episode: - Drinking while podcasting - How to avoid bad deals when teaching abroad - Returning home and wanting to leave immediately - Family and friends who don’t understand why you travel so much - Teaching English in Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, and remotely - How to avoid tyrannical bosses in Korea - Balancing work with exploring as a digital nomad Links: - wordwithwinos.com - Dave's ESL Cafe ------------ Our book recommendation for this episode is The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein. Thinking Like an Entrepreneur While You Travel with Fyfe Barraclough

Sep 30, 2016 - 00:53:38

Fyfe Barraclough fell in love with traveling after college. He took a round the world trip with friends and came back with a serious urge to keep travel and to combine travel with day to day life. A few years later, after buying an Alpaca sweater on a trip to Ecuador, he started receiving a lot of compliments from friends and family. Everyone loved the sweater and blanket that he had brought home. For most people, those moments would mean nothing, but for Fyfe, it was a light bulb moment. If everyone likes these, why don’t I sell them? So after his next trip to Central America Fyfe made a detour to Ecuador. He loaded up on sweaters and blankets, and Alpacalyfe Apparel was born. Since then there have been all sorts of twists, turns, and adventures that go along with trying to do business in a developing country. Fyfe shares the challenges and education of starting an importing business and the steps you can take if you see something you love while traveling and want to find a way to sell it at home. Also covered in this episode: Fyfe’s first long-term travel experience Challenges when traveling with a group of friends Decision making when traveling in groups How running a painting business allowed him to travel How you make maple syrup The origin story of Alpacalyfe Learning that most Alpaca sweaters aren’t actually Alpaca (even though the tags say they are) Finding reliable suppliers Learning what customers want to buy Hassles with importing Steps to take if you want to import something you’ve seen traveling The educational experience of starting a business -------------- Our book recommendation for this episode is How To Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid. What Do I Do With All My Stuff?

Aug 25, 2016 - 00:40:40

One of the most common questions we are asked when people find out that we’ve spent so long traveling is, what did you do with all your stuff? Possessions are one of the most common reasons people don’t go traveling. I don’t want to give up my apartment, I wouldn’t know what to do with my house, with my car, etc. The things that we purchase to enrich our lives end up trapping us from making positive changes. So when you are considering a long-term trip, what should you do with all your stuff? We share our story of renting storage units, moving out of apartments, selling everything, selling cars, holding garage sales, and interacting with creepy people on craigslist. Covered in this episode: Our story of moving four times in five years What to consider when you are debating selling vs. storing Best ways to sell things online Why you shouldn’t have a garage sale How to think about what you want to keep The emotional freedom of minimalism The hidden costs of storing your car Also make sure to check out our episodes with Jake Desyllas on our “The Path to Permanent Travel” episode where we discuss minimalism and objects with sentimental value, and our Sell All Your Stuff Episode with Al and Shelly McCullough ———— If you are learning or interested in learning a language make sure to check out the two for one special with show sponsor italki.com Check us out on Patreon. For The Cult of Travel

Aug 11, 2016 - 00:53:51

Is travel too popular? Are expectations and stories about travel inflated? Has travel culture exaggerated the benefits of taking a trip?  This week we respond to an article, "Against The Cult of Travel."  Authors Brett and Kate McKay argue that the popularity of travel has gone too far. That our culture has elevated travel to an almost supernatural level, and we should be more realistic about the value of travel.  We agree, disagree, and add nuance to their arguments: What is the cult of travel?  Is The Hobbit about travel?  Can travel help you improve your life?  Is travel a solution to or an escape from your problems?  Is travel inherently valuable?  And more If you like the podcast, join the community on Facebook. 4 Things You Can Learn Better Abroad

Dec 3, 2015 - 00:46:22

Do you feel unexcited by the idea of going to university or college? Do you feel like school has killed your love of learning? You're not alone.  The idea of going travelling right after high school wasn't something that either Amanda or Ryan considered, but after having completed university and going travelling, they've realized how much travel taught them that school wasn't able to teach them, or didn't teach them well.  On this episode, they discuss: Language learning History Social skills and communication Finances and budgeting Did you learn a language in high school or university, but feel frustrated because you still can't speak it fluently? Did you learn about history simply to regurgitate the information out for a test, and then forgot about it? Do you struggle with meeting new people and interacting with people who are different from yourself? A budget? What's a budget?  Travelling gives you a different perspective on learning a language, and shows you that learning a language can be fun and fulfilling. Every day abroad can be a history lesson, and history is actually super interesting when you experience it first hand. Travelling gives you the opportunity to meet hundreds of people from around the world, and interact with them at a deeper level. Finally, travel teaches you how to budget because you only have so much money and you are forced to choose what you want to do with it each day. The value of your money becomes completely different when you're abroad.  Did you enjoy this episode of the podcast? Like us on Facebook or support us on Patreon!

Ayahuasca Experiences in Peru

Jul 3, 2015 - 00:50:19

Ayahuasca is a medicinal hallucinogenic tea used by indigenous tribes in the Amazon.  It is a tea made from two plants and the result is a very strong psychedelic substance. Ayahuasca is becoming more and more popular as people realize the massive physical and mental health benefits that it can provide. From addicts curing their addictions, physical injuries healing, and people processing childhood trauma, the evidence for its positive benefits continue to grow. It’s not all positive though. Accompanied by strong nausea and purging, it can be a very painful experience. From its home in the jungle of Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, ayahuasca ceremonies have now spread and are available in many places in South America. Participating in an ayahuasca ceremony was one of the most meaningful and significant experiences we have ever had while traveling. On this week’s episode, we share more of our personal experiences attending an ayahuasca ceremony, the personal development benefits that we have experienced, and why we wanted to go in the first place. You’ll also learn about how our opinions of drugs have changed over time, more information and resources for learning more about ayahuasca and finding a ceremony if you are traveling South America, and much more!
