165: LARP Disaster

May 26, 2017 - 00:38:36

Jon has some things to say about Pat Metheny. Also Nyle Steiner. This New York Times piece on German outdoor preschools is interesting but I'm not sure it'll work in Alaska. We prep for our upcoming podcast about Jeff Goldblum (probably not a real thing) by talking about The Tall Guy. Moltz had never heard of Stella, the comedy group. Jason Alexander has long said he was inspired by William Shatner. They probably wouldn't make a movie like Crazy People anymore. Lex recommends a podcast called Brains On. And we all like Hello From The Magic Tavern if it’s not always kid-friendly. 153: Kids R Weird

Mar 1, 2017 - 00:49:32

We talk about a bunch of parenting stuff before we get to entertainment, I swear. Moltz love The Great Escape but there are a few goofs in the movie (he's gonna have to go back and check the one he mentioned because it doesn't seem to be listed on IMDB). Lex can'd even start watching Back to the Future III without anticipating the creepy crotch kid. Turns out Lex actually watches television shows. One that he's enjoyed 15 minutes of is one Moltz suggested: Travelers. Lex had a suggestion for Moltz: Santa Clarita Diet. Moltz's own suggestion is The Crown. We all suggest A Series of Unfortunate Events. Please take the time to fill out a 5-minute survey on podcast advertising. When you're finished you can enter a drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card! Moltz and son still like the new Plants vs Zombies card game. Lex's daughter still refers to Moltz's Minecraft book as well as some other, lesser Minecraft books. Bitmoji is a god damn horror show if you ask me. Please refer to the list of films that most frequently use the word "fuck". Our thanks also to Toca Boca, makers of Toca TV. Jon's last name is Armstrong if you hadn't heard. Lex still likes to play Excitebike. Moltz wants to get the Midway Arcade figure for Lego Dimensions. I mean his kid does. His kid. Super Mario Maker is a pretty cool game, too. Moltz fondly remembers making levels for Marathon. His favorite game of all time, though, is Myth. A game the kids love is Track Mania Turbo. Shufflepuck Cantina is an iOS game based on the classic game Shufflepuck Café. In graduate school (yes, really), Moltz played many hours of Strategic Conquest. You all know that Airborne is B.S., right? Firewatch is a great game. Lost Highway is a good movie. Neither of these are probably for the kids. But Inside Out is. There's a new trailer for Captain America: Civil War. Jon's favorite non-Pixar animated film is Boxtrolls. Of course, we all like Airplane! and The Naked Gun, but probably not for the kids. 101: Civics

Mar 4, 2016 - 00:48:04

Lex is away this week so Jon and Moltz start by talking about movie trailers. Surprise. The trailer for the new Ghostbusters looks pretty good but has one problem that bugs us. Jon is looking forward to Batman vs. Superman, Moltz is skeptical. Jon has seen and recommends Deadpool, but it's clearly not for kids. That taken care of, we move on to civics, like how to talk to your kids about Donald Trump. Maybe someone should have had that conversation with Chris Christie. Jon recommends The Whistlestop, a podcast on politics by John Dickerson. Our thanks to Audible for sponsoring this episode. Go to Audible.com/ttca to get a 30-day trail absolutely free. Ladies and gentlemen, the poop stuck in my butt song. And, to follow that up, here's Emily Mandelbaum singing Let Me Poop to the tune of Let It Go. Camelback Resort has some serious water slides. 90: A Very Chomsky Christmas

Dec 11, 2015 - 00:57:00

No Lex this week, he's still on vacation. Jon's daughters are fans of Little Big Planet. Moltz's son is hoping to get Lego Dimensions this year. Moltz will, sadly, not be playing Star Wars Battlefront on a shiny new Playstation 4 this year. Moltz reminisces about March of the Wooden Soldiers which he feels is what a joke in this Simpsons episode is based on. There's yet another trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Carrie Fisher did a terrific interview on Good Morning America. This brings us to an Ewok-themed t-shirt. If you're looking for something indescribably for that special someone, try some art by Brandon Bird (not a sponsor, we're just fans). Check out Bad Day On The High Sea, for example. Or Winter Wonderland. Our thanks to Little Passports. Dec 4, 2015 - 00:39:35

The Moltzes played Settlers of Catan on Thanksgiving. The Friedmans played Pop 5. Moltz misspoke in the episode. The game his wife and son played was Cover Your Assets, not Protect Your Assets. Jon suggests getting people underwear and other items. Moltz has still not seen Inside Out. Our thanks to Little Passports. Lex and Jon are fans of Rocksmith, which is not an advertiser. Harrison Ford surprised some fans on Skype, unfortunately none of them were us. Hey, who likes purity balls? There's nothing weird about them. When talking to your kids about sex, you can go Focus on the Family or Planned Parenthood. At what age should you talk to your kids about The Snuggie Sutra? 86: Guitar Shopping

Nov 13, 2015 - 00:51:39

Moltz is away this week and we invite listeners to send some good energy and thoughts his way. Everybody should be fine. Unless they are not. The correct pronunciation of pedagogy. TL;DR: the long and short o sound are acceptable. Lex and Jon have a conversation about Math homework and the Common Core, both of which are the bane of parents throughout the known universe. Jon references this article on Medium about how a student showed the correct answer, but an incorrect methodology. Lex is having doubts about his sordid past, namely The Snuggie Sutra, posted here in a tacky, sad way. We aren't above sad and tacky. Lex and Jon talk about piano lessons, benefits of staying with an instrument through high school. Horrible dad jokes are exchanged. Shopping ensues. Our thanks to Little Passports. For reference, here's Liam as a restricted motion pumpkin. Jon is not a fan of Five Nights At Freddy's. Children, however, seem to like it. Kids also like Disney's Descendants. Lex's Olaf pumpkin is a little messed up. The Minion is a little better. Lex is a fan of the Inside-Out Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Not everyone should look at Moltz's Halloween mustache. Here's Lex as Mr. Incredible. Our thanks to Little Passports. 84: Holy My Goodness

Oct 30, 2015 - 00:42:01

This week we start by talking about how you talk to your kids about an uncertain future. Moltz is the only one who took his kid to The Martian, which has swearing and is suspenseful but not terrifying. Unfortunately, the trailers before it for Crimson Peak and The Forest are terrifying. Lex approves of the trailer for Hotel Transylvania 2, which is getting decent reviews. Lex recounts his kids watching The Princess Bride. The big take-away from Back to the Future is that a boy kisses his mom. We also talk about swearing! Lex would like you to consider visiting Cheeburger Cheeburger. Lex is absent on this very special episode of Turning This Car Around where Moltz and Armstrong let The Force in by talking about the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We spend most of this episode talking about the new Star Wars trailer because kids. Lex doesn't like Star Wars that much but he super likes Spaceballs. Then we spend some time talking about Mel Brooks movies. LATE BREAKING NEWS: Our data team has this to report. Lex bought his daughter Clue but it wasn't this one. Jon starts off by talking about Magnolia. Lex talks about Neil Flynn and West Wing. Moltz talks about The Martian. Jon's vote for best 3D movie goes to The Edge of Tomorrow. This is a movie podcast, right? Jon took a trip down the Green River as a kid but it wasn't this Green River. Moltz's dad claims to have been one of the first people to drive on The New Jersey Turnpike. Lex talks about Randy Pausch's last lecture. Lex not actually so fondly remembers Guess Who. Moltz doesn't care if he sees Steve Jobs. Our thanks this week to Mack Weldon. Oct 9, 2015 - 00:49:04

We start out by talking about names. Lex's kids all happen to have analogs in the Joss Whedon universe. Sierra was almost Sienna if not for Sienna Miller. One of Jon's daughters is kind of named after character in The Wire. Apropos of nothing, we're all fans of Daniel Craig. Lex recounts the premise of Grandfathered which, other than looking at John Stamos, is not great. Our thanks this week to Mack Weldon. 78: GWAR

Sep 18, 2015 - 00:42:25

We start by talking about Ahmed Mohamed, the teen charged for bringing a clock to school. Moltz got several of the details wrong, but Florida teen Kiera Wilmot was not as fortunate. The mayor of the town where Ahmed Mohamed goes to school is very concerned about Sharia law. We then ask the important questions like "At what age should you teach your kids about Gwar?" Lex is away this week so first Jon and Moltz discuss the new iPad Pro, Apple TV and iPhones because they have apparently forgotten the theme of this podcast. Apple's new upgrade program looks pretty good. Then the trailer for a new documentary on "Back to the Future" causes them to... go back in time and reminisce about classic receivers and stereo equipment. Our thanks this week to Mack Weldon. California is requiring self-driving vehicles have manual controls. Jon fondly remembers his VW Rabbit. Moltz loved his mom's Saab 900 and his dad's BMW 2002. His Acura Integra got stolen once. Lex will not drive the baby sitter home lest he go through what Homer Simpson did. In New Jersey you can't have an unrestricted driver's license until age 18. Here's the reading for the day: Most Parenting Advice Is Worthless, So Here's Some Parenting Advice." Here's a good book on minimalist parenting called "Minimalist Parenting". So, take it easy and learn to play craps with your kid. Jon recently enjoyed some quality time with his daughter playing the Lego Movie game. The parents in this YouTube video are not spending quality time with their daughters. It's like Scared Straight but much more horrible. Lex's daughter is a fan of the Hopscotch app. Jon reminisces about Parenthood and both he and Lex say "NO!" to Bratz. Back to the Future has a surprising amount of swearing and sexual assault. Hey, kids, who wants drugs?! Lex has apparently seen White Men Can't Jump which is weird. Lex took his kids to Diggerland and they did not do drugs there. Jon and Lex recommend Super High Me. Probably not for the kids, though. Set a good example for your kids by eating broccoli in front of them. But not cauliflower. Our thanks this week to James Patterson. A reluctant reader himself and the father of a reluctant reader, Patterson advocates getting kids into books by listening to them. Big news: The Midroll has been acquired by Scripps and we aren't all rich because of this. One of us has more money, but probably isn't rich as far as we know. Somehow this is an excuse for us to discuss Shomer Shabbat. Lex's daughter enjoyed her first Weird Al Yankovic concert. Follow us: @ttcashow. It's summer and we all wish we had machines that spray on sunscreen. If you open your mouth in the machine you can be shiny and chrome. Jon and Lex speak fondly of Global Entry, if you know what I mean. Moltz saw Mad Max: Fury Road while his family was away. Good movie, not for kids, really. Lex talks about the Kidz Bop version of Honey, I'm Good. Lex and Jon obliquely discuss Inside Out because Moltz hasn't seen it. Moltz has canceled his beach trip but it's not because of tsunamis. Moltz is recovering from his first night with the wife and son away so please be respectful and listen to this episode quietly. We spend a bit of time discussing whether or not college is worth it. Here is a link to a piece that discusses the same thing. Our advertiser sprays you in the face with a firehose of great magazine and one of them is an issue of Entrepreneur featuring Turning This Car Around's very own Alexander Freedmund. Jul 2, 2015 - 00:47:17

This episode was recorded a few weeks back but it's about summer plans so it's a good time for a gut check. Jon recommends sea-bands for car sickness. Aren't those car-bands? Lex's family is going to Dutch Wonderland and Hershey Park. The Dutch Wonderland dragon may be a ripoff of Figment. Later in the year, Lex's kids may go to an indoor water park like Great Wolf Lodge but not Great Wolf Lodge, Aquatopia. A large part of the episode is about sneaking booze onto cruises. And for that we recommend Rum Runner flasks. You can get them on Amazon along with Shampbooze. But don't drink Beer-Enriched Body on Tap, no matter what Kim Basinger says. Then Jon and Moltz wax poetic about the lovely ladies of the 1970s like Lauren Tewes and Maren Jensen. And then the original Battlestar Galactica. And Lex talks about his love for Courtney Thorne-Smith. We're very sorry. Not really. The kids in the cabin Moltz was chaperoning a few months back talked about their love of the women of Pokemon. This week we talk about Father's Day and so much more. We all agree that the guitar solo is a lost art. For Father's Day, Jon and Moltz were both planning on going to the movies, Mad Max: Fury Road and Jurassic World, respectively. Lex expected to get an Eagles-related gift. For Father's Day, Moltz did get chain saw but it didn't work out and is going back. WTF had Barack Obama on but we've only ever had John Gruber. Jun 17, 2015 - 00:52:28

This week we talk about the sacrifices parents make. First, as some FU, Jon and Moltz's ideas for a reboot of The Rockford Files was favorited by Jim Garner's daughter. Moltz sacrificed being at the live episode of The Talk Show at WWDC. Jon discusses a study showing younger siblings are more likely to be gay which has probably been debunked since then. Lex bought his kids a refurbished iPad mini because he loves them. Jon's girls play Goat Simulator and Moltz is Goat Simulator-curious. We spend a few minutes talking about the various models of iPads. Does Not Commute is also a great game. Our thanks this week to Loot Crate, a monthly subscription box service for epic geek items. This week we talk about middle school. Sometimes a kid in middle school might have to spend a night in the box. Middle schools may have dress codes and sometimes they're ridiculous. Moltz's son had to learn that a school report should not be written in the style of E. E. Cummings Jon's middle school swimming pool experience explains so much. So very much. 63: Summer Family Movie Blockbuster Edition

Jun 5, 2015 - 00:58:02

Lex is away so we talk about summer television and movie-watching. Or something like that. First we talk about illness and how Moltz can't see Felix the Cat or Heckle and Jeckle. Jon and Moltz both fondly remember General Hospital's heyday. Both of their moms were into As The World Turns. Jon and Moltz were both a little weirded out by Mr. Roger's Neighborhood even though the man was a saint. Have you seen the Thriller video? Talk about cultural touchstones. Which is what we're doing. Speaking of things with Vincent Price, Moltz fondly remember The 4:30 Movie. You could watch that while waiting for Dialing for Dollars to call. Moltz talks about Age of Ultron. Other summer movies for nerds and their middle-school kids are The Fantastic Four, Ant-Man and maybe Jurassic World. We had hopes for Tomorrowland but it didn't get reviewed all that well. The Poltergeist reboot is probably for older kids, if it passes muster. If you're confused about who controls what Marvel properties, here's a good diagram. Jon and Moltz envision a reboot of The Rockford Files starring Sam Rockwell. Moltz doesn't praise Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but he does praise Kyle MacLachlan in it. For younger kids, Inside Out looks good. Moltz still hasn't seen Mad Max: Fury Road. The Star Wars trailer brings up the subject of prequel fan edits. Did you know Jonathan Frakes worked as Captain America back in the 1970s? Captain America: Civil War hasn't been filmed yet but seems already like it's got too many characters in it. 62: Blood Coaster

May 27, 2015 - 00:48:04

This week we talk about going away. Also coming back. Jon talks about his trip to the Faroe Islands. Jon recommends the San Francisco Exploratorium when in "Frisco". It seems like every time we talk about travel we end up talking about theme parks and this time is no different. We all love The Tower of Terror because it's awesome. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is OK but less awesome. Lex is taking his kids to Diggerland USA. You read that right. Moltz once took his son to the Philadelphia Mint and he loved it. Our thanks to Next Issue for sponsoring this episode. Next issue is the newstand for you mobile device. 61: Learning and Some Hugging

May 17, 2015 - 00:40:59

This week's episode is, sadly, Moltz-free. Jon and Lex do their best to talk about decisions parents face when a child performs well educationally. And then there is hugging. Lex's accelerated/special learning included a lot of Tangram work. Jon mentioned ELP, the Utah equivalent of New Jersey's Primary Enrichment Program (PEP). For the record, this is called "Extended Learning Program". Follow us: @ttcashow. Lex Friedman can be found @lexfri, John Moltz can be found @Moltz and Jon Armstrong is @blurb.

60: Apple Watching Kids

May 5, 2015 - 00:40:14

This week we talk about Apple Watches and kids. Also what you'll keep of your kids art. Moltz tells a story about a loose dog which makes him thing of The Incredible Journey. The book and the movie but not this version of the movie. Lex and Moltz tell Jon all about their Apple Watches. Jon makes a reference to a song by the Cure that Lex and Moltz don't get. Speaking of music, check out Innocence and Despair an album recorded at The Langley Schools back in the 1970s. It's kids singing adult songs. Try Desperado. Hearing a little girl sing "Your prison is walking through this world all alone" is pretty cool. While talking about kid art, somehow the Starsky and Hutch car comes up. Don't stick around for our discussion of men's leather underwear. But they make great Mothers Day gifts. Follow us: @ttcashow. 59: Let's Get Physical. Or not.

Apr 23, 2015 - 00:50:51

Moltz is ridiculously mad about the Apple Watch ordering situation. He's pretty sure that two-thirds of listeners have ordered an Apple Watch. But the real subject of this week's episode is physical education and some about games. And camp. Anyhow. Lex's daughter plays Newcomb, a version of volleyball. Moltz's son recently earned his purple belt. Somehow we learn about whether or not Passover and Easter have to happen about the same time. Moltz and Jon are fans of Taco Time, which Moltz uses as a reward for karate time. Follow us: @ttcashow. 58: 5th Grade Camp

Apr 17, 2015 - 00:50:34

This week Moltz relates his experience at camp. This camp, to be precise. Jon expresses his love for all things Wes Anderson like Grand Budapest Hotel and, pertinent to this conversation, Moonrise Kingdom. He's also a fan of Boyhood, although that's not Wes Anderson. Moltz keeps bringing up Daredevil. Moltz also reminisces about his childhood experience at camp. This camp, to be precise. Cody makes an appearance and Lex would like you to know there is some evidence that you shouldn't neuter your pet too early. Follow us: @ttcashow. 56: Musical Camp

Apr 3, 2015 - 00:49:01

This week we talk about the theater. Lex likes Little Shop of Horrors. But his favorite stage production is The Book of Mormon. Jon likes The Elephant Man. Moltz picks Camelot. Jon was in Dracula. Moltz was in Antigone. What this has to do with parenting is anyone's guess. Jon's daughters have seen Mary Poppins and Lex's daughter has seen Matilda. Moltz's son doesn't want to sit still that long. THIS JUST IN: Turning This Car Around stats. Lex's daughter has her own web site and it's awesome. #55: Lexless

Mar 27, 2015 - 00:57:46

No Lex this week, so Jon and Moltz talk about learning how to drink, "Dad voice", collecting things and Jon's advice on how to scan old negatives using Legos. There's a brief diversion about our old Macs, including the Centris 660AV and the old Mac Pro and the 2007 iMac. Moltz and his son did their first Meerkat which was of them playing Beanboozled. Nerds that we are, we lean a little earlier on when to get kids a smartphone. We wish that Apple's Family Sharing worked well enough to use but it doesn't yet. Our thanks this week to Bluum. 54: Free Range Parenting

Mar 20, 2015 - 00:48:08

It's an all-scare-tactics episode as we talk about THE DANGER THAT LURKS FOR CHILDREN EVERYWHERE. If Kimmy Schmidt can get abducted, it can happen to anyone, right? Except it turn out it's really rare and much rarer than people think. Still, parents are cited for letting their kids walk a mile alone. It's madness. Instead of investigating parents who let their kids walk home alone they should be investigating things like Motherboy. Our thanks this week to Bluum. 53: The Random Show

Mar 13, 2015 - 00:47:21

We start by talking about the Apple Watch and new MacBooks because we're dads who are also nerds. Good news Minecraft fans! Mojang will soon be shipping its own Java with Minecraft so you don't need Oracle's tarted up version. If you want your kids to learn programming and other stuff through Minecraft, check out MinecraftEDU which provides support services from schools to use Minecraft and LearnToMod which is an introduction to programming mods for kids. Lex then explains Kidz Bop which is either a great way to introduce kids to music they otherwise shouldn't listen to or a damn nightmare, depending on your point of view. Richard Cheese's covers are better but not kid-friendly. The Jonathan Coulton cover of Baby Got Back is not for kids, either. Can't Touch This is probably OK. To continue the stream of consciousness of this episode, we mention the next season of Community and Daredevil on Netflix and a bunch of other stuff. But check out this Daredevil trailer. Looks good. Hank is reading The Martian even though it has a lot of swear words in it and will probably go see the movie. Somehow we get back to the Apple Watch but this time talk about Every Mother Counts and Jon's connection to it and Christy Turlington Burns who has an Apple Watch and you don't. 52: Performance Anxiety

Mar 5, 2015 - 00:49:14

Let's talk about performances. Music, plays and kicking ass. First we talk about the weather. There's so much snow on the east coast planes are sliding off the runways but in Washington state there isn't enough snow on the volcano to play in. Jon's daughter just nailed a recital. Moltz's son doesn't like performing much anymore unless it's breaking boards. Certain faiths might help you get used to public speaking. The Parental Guilt Industrial Complex is run by Barbara Streisand. Speaking of performances, Pee Wee Herman is coming back. Our thanks this week to Bluum. 51: The Hard Questions

Feb 28, 2015 - 00:41:20

This week we talk about explaining the hard things, like death. Jon knows some girls who are literalists like Amelia Bedelia or Drax the Destroyer. Sometimes explanations get hard. Lex uses Dead Man's Switch which will send out pre-written emails in the event of his untimely demise. This whole episode is a real downer. Our thanks this week to Bluum. 50: Fears and Dogs

Feb 20, 2015 - 00:45:24

This week we talk about fears. Eventually. Sometimes you just start a podcast and then you figure out what it's about during the podcast. Jon recounts a treatment he's heard of for OCD. Lex's daughter is considering donating her hair and if your or someone you know is doing that, go with Pantene Beautiful Lengths rather than Locks of Love. Moltz's son is not a fan of loud noises and he helpfully tried to pass that along to Scott Simpson's son. Our thanks to Fracture for sponsoring this week's episode. Feb 13, 2015 - 00:53:07

Dogs, dogs, dogs. Lex is getting a new dog. This dog, to be specific. Jon recommends The Art of Raising a Puppy. Lex and Moltz aren't so sure. Moltz recommends a squirt bottle for raising a dog. Uber for puppies is a thing. Jon offers a cautionary tale about Beverly Hills Chihuahua. If you don't want a dog, you might get away with getting your kid a Fur Real. Our thanks to Fracture for sponsoring this week's episode. Fracture prints your photographs directly on glass. It's like hanging your iPad on the wall. Colors pop and it comes ready to hang. 48: Anal Vacuuming Technique

Feb 6, 2015 - 00:46:13

This week we talk about chores. Jon rudely brings up the last five minutes of the Superbowl. This episode is not brought to you by Febreze, Swiffer or the shredding industry but it might as well have been because those are good chores for kids. Moltz doesn't recall having to clean up his Star Trek action figures when he was a kid. Jon used to vacuum every time a Senator Jake Garn came over. Moltz's kid likes to help cook, particularly if it's omurice. Our thanks to Fracture for sponsoring this week's episode. Fracture prints your photographs directly on glass. 47: Rabbit Poop

Jan 23, 2015 - 00:47:21

This week we talk about pets because we're so sick of talking about kids. Moltz recommends guinea pigs as small pets but his info on bedding is out of date and backwards. There's not conclusive evidence, but you probably shouldn't use either pine or cedar shavings but should use fleece or paper. It's important to learn the difference between rabbit poop and brown Sixlets. Guinea pigs and rabbits have to eat their own poop because... well, they just do. Jon has also owned dogs, the Internet-famous Chuck and Coco. If you're in LA, Jon recommends Animal Crackers. This episode is not brought to you by Nature's Miracle but it should have been. Lex wants to get a Morkie. Here's a picture of Moltz's dog when they first met him. Moltz believes poodles look better with the puppy haircut which is to say no haircut. Here's Grant in action as a pup. That video also features Hank with a Salvador Dali mustache. (Some of these Flickr links weren't working in Safari for some reason, but do work in Chrome.) If you have a poodle, sometimes you have to overcompensate in his dress. Training is as much for the humans as it is for the dog. Always agree with your spouse on what kind of haircut the dog will have before he goes to the groomer or you might end up with this. If you do get a dog and you totally should because what else are you doing, get the dog this squirrel thing. Follow us: @ttcashow. 46: Vomit Jelly Beans

Jan 15, 2015 - 00:54:02

We start with a discussion of hygiene and then move into more game talk. The Armstrong kids (and Jon) enjoy a nice game of Tripoley or Apples to Apples. The Friedmans like Blokus and Jishaku and the Moltzes like Risk and Sushi Go. We also reminisce about Green Stamps. Jon and Moltz do, anyway. Jon likes The Last of Us which is decidedly not for the kids. Pee-Wee's Playhouse on the other hand, is great for all ages. As is The Tick animated series. For some reason we also discuss Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Our thanks this week to Loot Crate, a monthly subscription box service for epic geek items. Jan 7, 2015 - 00:44:43

First we review our respective holidays. Lex has seen and recommends Boyhood. Jon has some choice words for the people who took down the Playstation Network on Christmas. So instead of playing Minecraft, they played the LEGO Movie game. Lex talks about some troubles playing Minecraft on the Kano. The Friedmans also watched Home Alone. Moltz considered watching Die Hard with his son but then thought better of it. Our real subject today is how we play with our kids. Lex does projects with the kids (Snap Circuits are pretty cool, by the way). Moltz used to run obstacle courses with his son. There were not American Ninja Warrior caliber. Or even Wipeout caliber. Jon's girl got the LEGO Rapunzel castle and Moltz's son got the LEGO Minecraft cave. Moltz's family plays a lot of Monopoly and poker. Trouble can be a fun game to try to extract vengeance on someone. And as you do on a parenting podcast, we talk about The Deer Hunter. Lex likes to beat his daughter at Typeracer. 43: Holiday Johns

Dec 12, 2014 - 01:05:46

Lex was traveling this week so we have a guest, one John Gruber. He's apparently some guy in the Internet. Not coincidentally, this is our longest episode ever. What was the deal with bearer bonds back in the 1980s movies? They were basically what every villain was after. In the upcoming SPECTRE, it's probably something else. Don't take the kids to see American Sniper for the holidays. We talk again about our Frozen experiences. A holiday trip to FAO Schwarz seems dicey but if you're in Manhattan how can you not? Also, Dylan's Candy Bar. Oh, man. Playmobil has some great robbery sets that Gruber and Moltz speak highly of. Their kids might, too. Not sure. Moltz's kid is getting a PC laptop for Christmas and Moltz is already having trouble with it. Moltz wants to know if Jon's and Gruber's kids are getting his Minecraft book for Christmas. Gruber's kid might be getting a Playstation 4 with LEGO Batman 3 and FIFA Soccer. Jon's kids might be getting Minecraft for Playstation. One wants an Easy-Bake oven. If you don't follow the Grubers on Twitter, they had an interesting time setting up their Christmas tree this year. Moltz's tree contribution is putting up his Star Trek ornaments. We share the New York Time's opinion. If you're not one, you can read what it's like to be a black man in the U.S. and watching Do The Right Thing. Nov 26, 2014 - 00:42:11

This week's discussion centers around gender. Which leads us to presents, comic book movies and farting. It all makes sense, trust us. We're professional podcasters. Moltz's son got a Little Tykes kitchen for his first Christmas. One year Jon's girls got a Barbie car. Lex and Jon are big fans of Big Hero 6. Moltz hasn't seen it yet because he's at home watching Guardians of the Galaxy over and over. Moltz discusses Marvel's recent moves with Captain Marvel, Captain America and Thor. [Note: There's a brief glitch in Lex's audio about half way through. Unfortunately, it was a problem in the source file. We regret the problem.] It seems like the holiday podcasts start earlier every year. In this episode, Jon and Moltz explain their Christmas traditions and Lex explains his family's Chanukah traditions. First, though, we talk about Lex's penis-shaped microphone. Don't buy anyone that. You're better off buying all your loved ones one of those instead of participating in the horror show of Black Friday. Moltz grew up listening to White Christmas. Some of those songs were written by Jews. Jewish kids might like an Adam Sandler CD. Kids love "CDs". They have nothing to put them in, but they love them. Or something about Jewish super hero, Ben Grimm. Jon's girls like LEGO Friends and it's understandable because the dolphin cruiser looks awwwwwwwsooooooome. Or you can get the kids a Lexbox One. Moltz is forced to explain the McConaughssance. If you're looking for a present for Moltz's dad, he's the guy who actually still likes fruit cake. 39: Minions Don't Have [redacted]

Nov 13, 2014 - 00:42:33

Lex talks about his Disney cruise this week. They're apparently pretty cool. Slides and food and entertainment and characters. If you like that kind of thing. He did not end up in a Gilligan's Island situation, so even better. Speaking of characters, if you go to Universal you can meet the Minions. We speculate on who's inside those costumes. Some follow-up discussion involves Ferberizing, because parents will never stop talking about getting their kids to sleep. Then a shout-out to Moltz's mom, Mrs. Moltz, who may be folding laundry right now. The other Mrs. Moltz, John's wife, does not listen to the show on his advice. 38: Judgment & Blow

Nov 5, 2014 - 00:40:32

This week we get judgy. Other parents... we're judging you. Not just this week but every week. We're just talking about it this week. Really, there's a long list of things we disapprove of, ranging from giving your kids unlimited access to soda and behaving like a boor in front of your kids is one of them. Pot is now legal in Washington but smoking it with your kids is never a good idea. Even smoking in front of your kids bring out the judgement in us. We're just laying down judgements left and right. Don't feel bad. We judge ourselves, too. Our thanks to Automatic for sponsoring this episode. 37: Teens on the Corner

Oct 30, 2014 - 00:39:03

Hey, it's Halloween! We talk about costume ideas. Here's Lex as a greaser. Which pretty much just looks like Lex. Then we spend some time workshopping a "Han Solaf" concept. Jon discusses the dangers of drinking and trick or treating and how it leads to a pumpkin-gate situation. We also ask the hard questions like, "Does it really count as being a steampunker if you only do it on Halloween?" Naturally, expect to see a lot of Frozen this year. So much Frozen. This week we're $&^$-ing talking about *$&#@ swearing. If you want to read about kids and swearing, you could read this but you already subscribed to the podcast, right? You're probably in your car. Why are you even reading these show notes while you're driving? LOOK AT THE ROAD AND LISTEN TO THE PODCAST. Somehow we end up talking about Dennis the Menace even though there's very little swearing in it. We also discuss whether Jon's youth was more Footloose or The Wonder Years. 35: There Are Two Holes In The Basement Wall

Oct 17, 2014 - 00:47:20

In this episode, we reminisce about how stupid we were before we had kids. And happy. Probably because we could get sleep whenever we wanted. There's a reason sleep deprivation is used as a torture technique. We take two brief breaks, one for a commercial and one to talk about Lex's manscaping. Basically, everything we thought about having kids was wrong. The Friedmans used the Moby wrap to carry their kids until they lost one in it. You're not going to be able to reason with kids so learn about primal scream therapy. When you have kids, you must talk about their poop. All the time. If your kid needs a probiotic, the Moltzes use this one which tastes great. Moltz has Nanoblocks but he'd probably do better with Duplo. In answer to Jon's question about what a banshee is a spirit usually seen as an omen of death. Or an X-Man. Our thanks to Ubooly for sponsoring this episode. 34: You'll Never Love a Clown Again

Oct 9, 2014 - 00:45:44

This time we're going to talk about the stories that get told. Some of them are lies, some of them are just fiction. Which is kind of like lying. Relevant films for some of Jon's kid's lies are The Sixth Sense and Poltergeist. Also, Shakes The Clown. Speaking of lying, we clear up what's not a lie but interesting nonetheless: when Lex has talked about riding a bike in past episodes, he's been talking about a TerraTrike. Just for the record. As for literature, Moltz's son likes joke books. Jon recommends Captain Underpants which Moltz seconds. Moltz also recommends Timmy Failure. Harry Potter, of course, is good for kids who are maybe 8 and up. We also talk about Minecraft. It's very popular. What's not popular is guys in Britain dressing up as clowns and standing around in the dark. Holy crap, no. Our thanks to Ubooly for sponsoring this episode. 33: Mucous Powers Activate!

Oct 2, 2014 - 00:50:17

Let's get something straight before we get into notes: the fact that Jon Armstrong was able to filter out the DEAFENING SOUND OF GRINDING that was going on on his end is sheer wizardry and he should be feared for his magics. Now, notes. We're going to talk about school sickness because it's that time of year again, but first we discuss the classic late '70s film Breaking Away and the classic '80s film Pretty In Pink. That Amazon link there, by the way, has that movie for $4.63 which is a steal. A good thing to do when you're home sick is to play Minecraft. Maybe you've heard of it. If you're not sick and you're in kindergarten, your biggest concern is when the hell you're going to get to play with the toy kitchen? This episode also features a surprise guest who may or may not be Lex's son who adorable and should not have to put up with our crap. Then Lex and Moltz announce their tech podcast -- The Rebound -- that doesn't include Jon and it's suuuper uncomfortable. You should tune in for at least that part. We spend a little time talking about new smartphones because nerds. When the kid is sick, the Moltzes will sometimes go to the Benadryl. And sometimes they'll even give it to the kid. Frankly, I don't even want to link to this but we talk about these horrors so I guess I have to: it's some disgusting syringe to suck snot out of a kid's head. And somehow we close with the Swedish bikini team ad. I DON'T KNOW. Sponsor: Once again, our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. Sep 17, 2014 - 00:52:21

Just remember, no podcast starts weirder than this one. That's our promise to you, the listener. But on this episode we talk about theme park vacations. Which are crazy expensive. Let's just be clear about that. For California Disneyland, Jon recommends the Hyatt Regency. When visiting Universal Florida, stay at the Loews Protofino Bay Hotel because the Expresspass is included in the price. When going to Disneyworld, Moltz recommends the Magicpass wristband for convenience. Lex uses the AllEars.net web site for Disney tips. If you're in marketing or advertising, you might even be able to deduct your trip. Talk to you accountant. Sponsor: Once again, our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. 31: Accidental Car Podcast

Sep 10, 2014 - 00:51:02

This week we continue talking about going back to school. And, because "car" is in the name of this podcast, we finally get around to talking about cars. Turns out Jalopnik is a car site, according to Jon. While waiting for his school to start, Lex's son asked 10 times a day if he could play Just Dance. Not related to getting to school, Jon talks about his recent trip to Universal Orlando and gives some important tips. We'll be talking more about this next week. If you haven't gotten your kids a backpack for school yet, Lex has another suggestion: a briefcase. Back to not on the subject, here's a horrible t-shirt that is not appropriately gender-neutral and you should not buy no matter how much you hate the New York Giants. It's out of stock anyway. And then we get back to cars and Jon tries to wave Lex off the Nissan Leaf. Follow us: @ttcashow. Lex Friedman can be found @lexfri, John Moltz can be found @Moltz and Jon Armstrong is @blurb.

It's back to school time! Congratulations, parents, you made it! Aaaaaand, sorry, kids. So sorry. (Not really.) For the etymology of the name Ruth's Chris Steakhouse you can check the Wikipedia page. That has not much to do with going back to school. Like you're surprised about that. But we do talk about how much we're looking forward to helping our kids with homework (not at all). To get things rolling, Lex talks about his lunch from GrubHub and then we all agree that our fathers were Nordicktrack users. Jon denies the rumors that his daughter is in a doom metal band. No, in fact she's into Taylor Swift. None of our kids have Bieber fever. Thank god. Jon has been getting his girls into Daft Punk while Lex is working the Weird Al angle. Moltz can't remember the name of the album his son liked as a kid but it was Dog Train. Now he's glad he's into Jonathan Coulton. Lex's daughters also like Frozen, of course. Lex himself is super into illegally ripping Laurie Berkner. Moltz recommends Just Dance for getting kids into popular music and getting them a good workout. Jul 12, 2014 - 00:47:14

This week we talk about what you save for your kids. First, though, it's summer and Moltz's kid loves him some wave pool. Here's what Lex's pool looks like. You're welcome at his house any time. After a story Lex tells later, though, you might think twice about it. Jon's dad left him a Bicentennial train set. Lex's son plays with Brio, but he doesn't consider that something he would leave as a legacy. Although, they're pretty crazy about it, a legacy train set needs a dangerous transformer. Lex tells a story about his doll Brian that you are not going to want to miss. The Moltzes still have all three of their teddy bears, but they've not been quite the companions that Brian was for Lex. 24: A Dishwasher Is More Important Than Meat. Also Bourbon.

Jun 25, 2014 - 00:45:14

This week we talk about Father's Day. Moltz got some nice glasses that look a bit like these. As far as things to go into fancy glasses, Jon recommends Maker's Mark or Bulleit for everyday bourbon drinking. For the good stuff, try Pappy Van Winkle or Widow Jane. Moltz likes Four Roses. This is a podcast about fatherhood, remember. If you're in Tacoma, get your meats at Dave's Meat & Produce. The dads then discuss an article in Esquire titled "Downsides of Being a Dad", just to bring it down a little bit. To bring it down further, Moltz discusses a This American Life story about The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar (but gets the timeframe off by 20 years over and over again). He also mentions Stories We Tell, a documentary about a woman who investigates whether the man who raised her is her biological father. Sponsors: Our thanks to Care.com for sponsoring this episode. 23: There is a Beaver in the Nursery

Jun 19, 2014 - 00:46:00

This week we talk about gear again, because there's a lot of territory to cover. We may do it again next week. If you haven't seen The Rockford Files, well, you should. That's not gear-related, though, unless answering machines count. If you love your child and want to prepare them for the police state, get yourself a video baby monitor. An in-window air conditioner is not a piece of parent gear per se, but an Amazon affiliate link is an Amazon affiliate link, you know what I'm saying? Jon's girls have a lady bug light for going to sleep that turns itself off after a while. Lex's have a Pillow Pet that does much the same. Moltz's son simply welcomes the darkness that eventually swallows us all. Of course, if you have kids each one is going to need an iPad. That should be obvious. You're definitely going to need about 100 strollers, at least one full-featured and then about 99 umbrella strollers. Baby backpacks can be good if your kid isn't a hair puller. Lex's wife liked the Moby Wrap and Armstrong liked the Baby Bjorn. For eating, if your kids like to eat, get the IKEA Kalas line of plates, cups, etc. Then lock 'em up with a baby gate. And if you want to know how to correctly load those Ikea plates and cups into your dishwasher, see here. Sponsors: Our thanks to Care.com for sponsoring this episode. 22: Useless Nipples

Jun 11, 2014 - 00:55:02

This week we talk about gear. Eventually. We start by talking about underwear, which is not exactly gear but we'll get to it. ThinkGeek has some underwear for the child in every dad. Then we talk about Frozen which is also not gear but is very popular with the kids these days, as is the LEGO Movie. Jon recommends Bullfrog sunscreen spray for applying to wiggling children (we're getting closer to gear). Lex recommends stick sunscreen for their precious faces that are screaming at you because you're trying to save them from skin cancer. Finally, we start talking about gear. Moltz and his wife had their car seats checked out by a local hospital so look around, there should be someone who can help you make sure you've got them in correctly. Jon recommends the Nissan Xterra (sadly, there's no Amazon affiliate link for that), even though it's not great for carseats. Dads with more than one kid recommend a membership to Sam's Club, BJ's or Costco. Parents of one kid are less enthusiastic but still supportive. The dads, naturally, recommend a diaper genie, unless you're an animal. You could also get a diaper vest. I guess. If that's not cool enough for you then check this out. Now we're talkin'. The Moltzes got their diaper bag at REI. Sponsors: Our thanks to Care.com for sponsoring this episode. #21: Swords and Guns and ...

Jun 3, 2014 - 00:47:34

First, some follow up from last episode. The artist who did the covers of the Gor books was Boris Vallejo, not Frank Frazetta. We spend about half the episode talking about his art. And sort of how it relates to parenting. Kind of. A little. Here's the centaur picture, which is totally relevant to parenting, as is the hawkman picture. As it turns out, the author of the Gor series wrote a book about sex. Then we talk about Mario Kart. What is this episode about? Jon and Moltz continue to talk about Boris Vallejo until Lex tells the story of how he stole a Playboy. Speaking of porn, Moltz uses OpenDNS to filter his son's devices. Jon tells the story of how his daughter overcame her fear and touched White Snake. Oh, sorry, a white snake. And we end still not knowing what this episode was about. Which is a metaphor for life. #20: Don't Put Fireworks Up Your Butt

May 28, 2014 - 00:51:22

We continue our discussion of summertime. Lex and Moltz do an impromptu review of the current summer blockbuster movie Godzilla (mild on the spoilers) which has the guy from Breaking Bad in it. There's a little confusion between Godzilla 2000 and the Matthew Broderick Godzilla. Jon and Moltz both recommend The Way, Way Back, a great summer movie appropriate for teens and up. Jon's summer travel growing up involved a styrofoam cooler while Moltz's involved Mad Libs. Lex's family trips were saved by the Walkman. Jon's summer reading was the Gorean Saga which causes Jon and Moltz to school Lex in the magic of Frank Frazetta who sadly passed away in 2010. We close with a discussion on how to use fireworks which Jon is very passionate about. Sponsors: Our thanks to Care.com for sponsoring this episode. May 21, 2014 - 00:40:14

Once again we ask our listeners to complete a short survey that will help keep this podcast and other podcasts you might enjoy running. And you could win a $100 Amazon gift card. What other reason do you need than self interest? Not to disagree with Game of Thrones, but summer is coming. Do you have a plan? You could send your kids to YMCA camp. But swim camp is maybe a better option if you can find one. Lex, however, does not recommend owning a pool. When the dads were kids, during the summer Jon did Boy Scouts, Moltz went to gymnastic camp and Lex went to "learning about sex and drugs" camp where he eventually worked as a counselor. You can learn a lot at camp. For example, Moltz learned that you can light a fart on fire. Jon then explains the term "blue darting". Lex learned about blow jobs. Just about them. Jon learned about killing a rabbit which, sadly, is not a euphemism for blow jobs. Follow us: @ttcashow. #17: Sex Talk 2: Army of [Redacted]

May 2, 2014 - 00:37:29

Sex, Part Deux! For an episode about sex we talk a lot about movies for some reason. There's not much sex in The Avengers, Man Of Steel or Thor but Jon learned everything he knows about women's underwear from the original Superman. Lex gets his information about women's underwear from Shark Tank. Grease is a great movie for learning about sex. Lots of direct references to sex facts that your kid won't understand. "Any questions?" The Godfather is good for teaching your kids about violence. Ace Ventura would be a good movie to teach kids about homophobia. Jacqueline Bissett in The Deep was Intro to Female Anatomy 101 for many a boy during the '70s. Although, Benny Hill is how Moltz learned about female anatomy. If you don't believe that Lex took his kids to a mob-themed restaurant that showed The Godfather movies on repeat, here are some pictures. #16: Why Do You Need the Rooster?

Apr 30, 2014 - 00:43:33

Speaking of sex, which we are on this episode, check out these cringe-inducing ads for HBO Go. Jon recommends Where Did I Come From? which features adorable images of people doing it. As for parts, Lex and Moltz mostly use clinical names but Jon's kids use euphemisms. Many a young lad learned the term "naughty bits" thanks to Monty Python's reference to those of Prime Minister Edward Heath. If you're interested in learning more about Jon's vasectomy -- and, really, who isn't? -- here's everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask. #15: Mistakes Were Made

Apr 16, 2014 - 00:52:12

The dads take a break from their usual sterling parenting advice (cough) to talk about things they screwed up. Getting your kids to take shots successfully should be like Scott Pilgrim, but there are no coins for winning. John has recently had to cut back on his son's screen time (good thing, too, because screens are DESTROYING OUR KIDS BRAINS). Gone are the days when you can just throw kids out the door a la Calvin and Hobbes. It's become a challenge to make sure your kids aren't overprotected. Jon tells of his time walking the lovely neighborhoods of Salford in the UK. Lex likens it to his experience in the neighborhood where the Groundlings school is. Jon strongly advises you against watching Little Children, the mere mention of which is kind of a downer and ruins the whole podcast. Not the episode, the entire podcast. Don't make the mistake John and Jon made. Don't help you kids with their homework. Although, it may or may not be an option if you actually want it to get done. Follow us: @ttcashow. #14: You're in Second Grade and Your Ass is Still in First

Apr 9, 2014 - 00:49:58

Other people's kids. The worst, right? It's not related to the topic, but John found his old mix tapes and expresses his fondness for Jim Carroll. Both Lex and Jon have the problem of their kids assimilating body issues. Lex seems to think he's on a different podcast. We finish with a discussion on swearing, which is all caused by other people's kids, of course, and the 4th grade urban myth that Justin Bieber has really eaten his own poop. Sponsor: Our thanks to Audible for sponsoring this episode. Go to Audible to download a free book today. #13: I've Been Vetted

Apr 2, 2014 - 00:54:13

On this episode, the dads talk about becoming a dad. Ch-ch-ch-changes! That's a David Bowie song, right? Once again the whole free-range kids thing comes up and it comes up early. Speaking of changes, since becoming a father, John cries while watching Finding Nemo. Jon and Lex recommend The Expectant Father. The dads recommend wills and starting to save for college five years before you were born. Not the kid, you. Lex laments no longer being able to binge-watch shows like House of Cards. Still, we can binge-watch shows like Clone Wars and Adventure Time. All the dads recommend therapy. Like that wasn't obvious. Sponsor: Our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. #12: Elmo Ate Daddy

Mar 26, 2014 - 00:53:09

Happy birthday! There are good birthday experiences and bad ones. And horrible ones. Lex is not a big fan of bouncy places like BounceU but Jon thinks Kangaroo Zoo isn't so bad and John doesn't mind Pump It Up. But as far as really good experiences, Jon is a fan of The wAirhouse and John likes The Little Gym for smaller kids. The benefit of the Little Gym is they have instructors, not sullen teen employees. Video game places like Odyssey are kind of a sensory overload experience. Lex has been to a dance party place and that's the nicest thing he can say about that. If you have several kids, Lex says it's just more cost effective to buy your own Elmo costume. You weren't using that dignity anyway. Here's Lex in full Elmo. Jon bought his daughter a Playmobil veterinary clinic because Playmobil is awesome. The dads argue over thank-you note etiquette and close with a Nixon reference. As you do when talking about kids birthday parties. Sponsor: Our thanks to the totally awesome DayOne for sponsoring this episode. DayOne is the journaling app for iOS and the Mac. #11: I Don't Have Time for That

Mar 19, 2014 - 00:56:12

Let's talk about time management. Can someone help us with this? Because we need it. John tries to sing a Jim Croce favorite but can't. But time songs are a thing and many of them can make you cry is what you should know. The dads support schools efforts to keep kids with peanut allergies alive, even if it makes making meals a pain in the butt. Yes, the Moltz's still subscribe to their local dead-tree newspaper. This has nothing to do with time management but the mashed potatoes thing is a Close Encounters of the Third Kind reference, if you haven't seen it. The dads do it judiciously but NEVER LEAVE YOUR KIDS IN THE CAR WHAT KIND OF LOUSY PARENT ARE YOU? #10: Stay in School

Mar 13, 2014 - 00:53:16

Let's talk about education. Getting to school, staying in school, homework, tests and the PTA. Jon's use of the term "redshirt" is questioned, particularly since it doesn't match up with John's known definition of the term. Now you know why John's kid probably won't be participating in any organized sports. Here are some pros and cons of standardized testing but just know that the dads are not fans of them. We'll also talk about where to meet hot moms (may also work for hot dads). Sponsor: Our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. #9: Ron is the 7th Cylon

Mar 5, 2014 - 00:54:56

Hey, kids! It's screen time! Experts say you shouldn't let your kids watch television until they're two. And then they should only watch test patterns for a year. As far as shows for little kids shows go, PBS's Curious George is pretty good. WonderPets, not so much. In the video game realm, the Lego series is good. And Jon should know, he's been playing console games since the Magnavox Odyssey. In the realm of crack games designed to keep you buying more and more, Jon's kids play Disney Infinity and John's plays Skylanders. Lex's kids play with iPads and you should just click that link and buy a few. Unless you want to get your kids the Retina model and then you should click this link. Lex also recommends Truck Tunes for educational listening on trucks. Sponsor: Once again, our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. #8: Rad Hair

Feb 25, 2014 - 00:59:04

This week we talk about getting ready in the morning. There's dressing, there's brushing teeth, there's hair... oh, god, so much hair. John recommends California baby hair detangler. Lex used a Barbie head to practice hair do's and hair don'ts. Speaking of hair, here's the hair that John had to deal with up until last summer. Be forewarned, this image may disturb more sensitive listeners. We won't be providing a link for Tinker Bell cosplay pictures which, uh, somehow just came up organically. We're pretty sure you can find those all on your own. But behold the horror of... tween Dora. They're not quite as cool as light-up Boba Fett sneakers, but here are some light-up Jango Fett sneakers. #7: Monsters Do Not Like Poodle Farts

Feb 20, 2014 - 00:55:18

This week we talk about getting away from your damn kids because they're driving you crazy! Be forewarned: many states require that you have some kind of child care, though. (Dogs apparently don't count? Lame.) John and his wife used Annie's Nannies in Seattle to find their nanny and she was awesome. And Breedlove is a company that will do the tax calculations for employing a nanny or babysitter for you. John and his wife used them when employing their nanny and John was later confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court without a problem. And he's not even a lawyer! Is empty nest syndrome not really a thing? Could be. How much should you pay a babysitter? No one knows. Sponsor: Our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. DayOne makes journaling your life easy and thorough. Get it. #6: Seat Backs and Tray Tables

Feb 12, 2014 - 00:51:34

In this episode we talk about travel. Sometimes you have to take your kid on the plane or on a long car trip, because... you hate yourself? Not really sure why. The FAA has a helpful site about child safety when flying, but in the end the most important thing to have with you is an iPad. When looking for music to listen to in the car, you could do worse than Laurie Berkner but not much better than They Might Be Giants. Also, just consider a classic form of entertainment like MadLibs. Because inserting "fart" and "poop" into sentences never goes out of style. Sponsor: Our thanks to DayOne for sponsoring this episode. DayOne is the journaling app for iOS and the Mac. #5: Weights On The Unit

Feb 4, 2014 - 00:49:25

This episode is sick. Because, yes, we talk about illness. WebMD has a piece on vaccinations and autism as does the CDC. The Council on Foreign Relations tracks outbreaks of diseases that are preventable by vaccinations. The flu shot versus the flu mist, which would win in a fight? When Jon grew up during the Depression, his mom gave him Paregoric. Yeah, it's opium. We get weepy about Batkid and then talk about testicular torsion and circumcision. And, finally... NORM! #4: Food

Jan 28, 2014 - 00:44:54

We talk food this week and how kids seem to have their own opinions about what they like to eat which is really annoying. We discuss some of our strategies and tactics and the outright lies we tell our kids in order to get them to eat something that's not the deboned finger of a mutated chicken-man or a wad of government cheese. To that end we recommend Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld. Contrary to what John Moltz says in the episode, peas are a vegetable, just not a very good one. Sort of a slacker vegetable. Soybeans, however, which are what edamame are, are legumes, not vegetables. So Jon Armstrong can't claim to be feeding his kids vegetables if that's his only vector. John Moltz recommends V8 V-Fusion Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade. (It has vegetables in it, but don't tell his son.) And here's a recipe for Whopper pie. Because you earned your treat. Jan 22, 2014 - 00:50:27

In this episode we talk timeouts, helping kids make better choices and how to discipline while still letting your kids know you love them. Also, we discuss how we were raised and parenting tips from our parents, like hitting your kids with a paddle. Lex suggests reading: Unconditional Parenting John suggests reading: Honey, I Wrecked The Kids Jon suggests reading: Raising Resilient Children Link: Yelling Doesn’t Help, May Harm Adolescents, Pitt-Led Study Finds Sponsor: Our thanks to DayOne, a terrific journaling app for iOS and the Mac, for sponsoring this episode.
